Well, it's finally resolved. (or at least that's what the tests have proven over the past 3 weeks)
We had to disable the onboard scsi and onboard nic, and added a different scsi card and a pci nic and now the tape drives work great. EVEN the ones that came back that were failing continually...
scsi tape drive failures...
Still not resolved...
But here are the common traits to the multiple servers we're having problems with.
osr 5.0.6 with all updates
Sony SDT-9000
ASUS cuv4x-dls motherboard with onboard scsi controller LSI SYM53C1010-33
the chipset is a VIA 694XDP

Hi there, I work with dvokins and this issue is still unresolved.
We have about 10 servers out in the field that are experiencing the same problems. One site can successfully do a backup if they use a tape cleaner first, but even that's about 50% of the time. It sounds like a dust problem...

Thanks again for your input.
Greatly appreciated!

Thanks again,
Don

I'll give it a try and run some tests though.
Have you had any experience with the Infortrend controller?
We have a IFT-2101UB Raid controller in some other servers that are...

I've upgraded a few old servers to new P4 Dell and Touch Servers. Both brands were operating slower than the previous servers using the same applications.
The only difference was that I'm utilizing RAID 1 now, but now I'm on a MUCH faster server.
The Dell server turned out to be...
HI there,

I moved it to amirdmon.sav and rebooted and now everything is fast. The MegaRaid controller has an alarm that goes off if a hard drive fails.

I've had the same problem with amirdmon. I wound up just moving it to amirdmon.sav and rebooted. All is good now.
It's still safe because the MegaRaid program has an alarm that sounds if a hard drive fails with or without this monitor.
I'm also having a performance issue with the same setup...
