I have a strange problem with a Sony SDT-9000. It will start to copy files, then hangs and returns a tape write error.

It is on LSI Symbios controller. Machine is running SCO 5.0.6 with rs506a installed.

We have tried:
-Many new tapes
-Installed another SDT-9000...(still the same problem)
-Switched SCSI channels
-Switched SCSI cables
-Checked for proper termination
-The command 'tape status' usually returns hard errors

Still the same problem each time. I am down to suspecting the motherboard. But before I do this, would anyone have another idea that I can try?

Thanks very much Doug Vokins

Was this issue ever resolved?? I am having the same issue. Please post any known resolutions!!

Hi there, I work with dvokins and this issue is still unresolved.
We have about 10 servers out in the field that are experiencing the same problems. One site can successfully do a backup if they use a tape cleaner first, but even that's about 50% of the time. It sounds like a dust problem, but it's only happening with the Sony SDT-9000's.

If a resolution does come up, we will post it here.

Thanks,
Don

scsi tape drive failures...
Still not resolved...
But here are the common traits to the multiple servers we're having problems with.

osr 5.0.6 with all updates
Sony SDT-9000
ASUS cuv4x-dls motherboard with onboard scsi controller LSI SYM53C1010-33
the chipset is a VIA 694XDP

We have other servers running on ASUS P2B-DS boards that haven't had this problem.

Has anyone else had problems with the cuv4x-dls motherboard and SCO??
Thanks,
Don

Well, it's finally resolved. (or at least that's what the tests have proven over the past 3 weeks)

We had to disable the onboard scsi and onboard nic, and added a different scsi card and a pci nic and now the tape drives work great. EVEN the ones that came back that were failing continually. EVEN the tapes that were coming back saying they were write protected.

A big load off the shoulders after having the same problem with about 10 remote servers.

Regards,
Don
