I do not notice a problem here. You can use the eyedropper to select either a color on the image itself or you can click in the square (black) and the color chooser will pop up. After clicking, the black box changes color and your preview adjusts, making the chosen color transparent.
If you want to change the brightness to blend your two images together, PSP X has a tool for this. Its called the lighten/darken brush. Use it by pushing L. now use it as a brush to lighten an area, if you want to darken use the right click instead of the left

Mabye you could do the same effect useing layers and the transparency feature in your layer pattelet
I dont know just a thought, but thats how I would try to do it.
Then again if you are not using a newer version, I dont remember trancparency being such an easy feature as it is now.

If using this method wih the gif optimizer, dont wory about deleting the white. A wizard will guid you through selecting a single color to be trancparent
when using open with, and browsing for the program notice that there is a check box at the bottom "always use this program" this will make sure that all files of this extenion are associated with PSP
if the background is a solid color you can use the "save as trancparent gif" wizard (in the export menue) to automaticly remove the background and save the file
