My guess is that the 95/98 network is using netbui which is not available under XP. You can install it seperatly. There is a folder on the xp cd that has the files for netbui in it. I would recomend however that you convert the older machines to tcpip and use a 192.168.1.X numbering scheme with...
I have seen a similar issue when drive jumpers were not correct, the bios detected thing ok but when the install got to trying to detect them it croaked, just hung. Video cards are always suspect, if you have another one, preferably a no frills, try it.
