I am trying to install Win XP Pro in my pc with a new motherboard (Intel 865GBF) and Pentium 4 (2.4 Ghz 800mhz Hyperthreading). When it goes to install Windows XP, it hangs when trying to install devices. Also, I was wondering what file system to use on the main 30 gig hard drive, FAT or NTFS because I am not sure what the differences are. I reformatted my hard drive (I have another 80 gig one). I put the 30 gig as the master on the primary IDE with the 80 gig as the slave. Also have an HP CDR/RW 8x write (master on secondary IDE), and a Samsung 16x DVD-ROM (slaveon sec IDE).

Lot of this about tonight - probably hardware issue (could be anything). with your setup, try install with just one hard drive & DVD connected (ie, disconnect big hard drive & CD writer) as a starter. Then look at eliminating culprit if that doesn't help (I'd go for RAM next).

NTFS is good for larger hard-drives, but I lean towards FAT32; because I had a horrible time trying to reformat my NTFS drives when my computer caught a virus, whereas the FAT32 drives worked perfectly.

I have seen a similar issue when drive jumpers were not correct, the bios detected thing ok but when the install got to trying to detect them it croaked, just hung. Video cards are always suspect, if you have another one, preferably a no frills, try it.

hope this helps

See if any of these help you.

NTFS v FAT32

Run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor.

You can use the Microsoft Windows XP Upgrade Advisor tool to audit the current status of your computer and get a report of known hardware and software compatibility issues (based on Microsoft testing before release).

Upgrade the Computer BIOS.

Before you start the install process, obtain and install the latest basic input output system (BIOS) upgrade for your computer from the computer manufacturer. If no Bios update is available set bios to original defaults. Make sure any Bios anti virus scanner is disabled.

If you've got USB devices, unplug them until you're done with the initial install, then plug them in and install them once the system is up and running.

There might be some help in these.

Thanks a lot guys for the responses. I disconnected the dvdrom and the 80gig hard drive and it installed perfectly. I added the 80 gig and now I am gonna put the dvdrom in. Thanks a lot I really appreciate all of your help.
