I can not get access to any of the following websites:

....the list goes on...basically any web pages that appear to have anything to do with anti virus.

When I try to access them, a "Log In" diaglog box pops up asking for a Username and Password.

For example, if I type into a web browser..I get a diaglog box asking for a username/password to connect to ftp.symantec.org?! Clicking cancel takes me to
Any ideas?!

You might have a virus. Did you run your virus program to check if you do?

If you don't have a virus you can check this out.

Right click Internet Explore>Properties.

You get the Internet Properties window. Click on Privacy>Edit. Check to see if there are any of the sites you mentioned being blocked from saving cookies on you machine.

Next click OK to get back to Internet Properties.

Click on the Content tab, are the Enable and or Settings boxes Highlighted? Click on Enable, If it asks for a password someone already Password Protected it. If you need a password and don't have one post back and I can help you with that.

If you can open it click on Approved Sites. If it is emty then something else is stopping you from entering those sites.

This is as far as I can help. Maybe someone here can be of more help.

Good Luck

Howdy:

Go to
When you get there, click on "Site Index" (small text near bottom).. Then click on "Online Security Check"

When that opens, you will get a pop up .. Use the "Virus detection" and run a scan..

Thanks for your help!

I managed to run an online virus scanner before I posted last night and it found no problems....

No sites are blocked at all....

When I try to go to I get a "Connect To.." dialog box asking for a username/password to connect to ftp.symantec.org. Clicking cancel then brings up the normal HTTP 401.2 - Unauthorized: page.

A tracert to brings back the following results:

D:\Documents and Settings\Rich>tracert
Tracing route to ftp.symantec.org [127.0.0.1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms localhost [127.0.0.1]

Trace complete.

Why is it trying to look for norton.com locally?!

Have a look in C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS or C:\WINDOWS\LMHOSTS and see if any addresses have been put in there by some dodgy software?

By the way, the F-Prot dos scanner from is good for this purpose - you can download it on another PC and it is small enough to transfer via floppy disks.
Remember to download the latest update files as well though.

Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

delete the HOSTS file.

Copy and paste this as a new file called HOSTS

[tt]+++++++++++ begin copy/paste area

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

++++++++++ end copy/paste area[/tt]

Reboot.

Try your security sites again.

Sometimes your system date and time may be incorrect and this can cause problems accessing certain sites.

hosts and lmhosts files have no additional entries....

Problem still not fixed!

Have you downloaded F-Prot on a different machine and transferred it via floppy disks (or CD burning).
As it is a DOS app, no registry entries, INI files or anything like that is required. It is completely self contained.

CC,

Check again your settings in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security Tab, Internet, Custom Level, Password Authentication. Try either the first or third radio button.

Check under your tcpip advanced dns and make sure there are no DNS suffexes listed.

Thanks for all the help so far - I've got an update to the problem!

Ive installed McAfee Firewall....

Internet browsing for all sites is fine except the anti virus ones....

When I try to access an anti virus site (eg the following occurs:

1) MS DTC console program tries to access the internet (winfolder\system32\msdtc.exe
2) I deny access
3) Step 1 occurs again
4) I deny again
5) COM Surrogate v5.1.2600.0 tries to access the internet (winfolder\system32\dllhost.exe)
6) I deny access
7) Step 5 occurs again
8) I deny access
9) "The page cannot be displayed" HTTP 500 Internal Server Error

If I allow COM Surrogate v5.1.2600.0 I'm immediately told "You are not authorized to view this page".

I'm about to uninstall IIS to see what affect that has...I shall report back!!

Now tried uninstalling IIS and that doesnt change anything - tracert to the anti virus sites still tries to look at 127.0.0.1

Am i REALLY going to have to reformat/reinstall everything!?

Open IE.

. Click on Help, About Internet Explorer. Does the second line on the screen show 128-bit encryption enabled? If not you need to update IE from Windows Update.

. Select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, scroll to the Security settings, check the 1st and 5th through last selections. Scroll to the HTTP selection section, and enable http 1.1.

. As Linney suggested, check your date, time, and timezone.

I hope you are not confusing a log that shows access to your localhost as necessarily a problem. You have to make references to localhost. Do a route print from a CMD session to make sure your routing tables include an entry for 127.0.0.1. You want this. I do not think denying access to COM services and the network hosts of XP is going to help you resolve this problem.

1) Yes - I do have the latest verion of IR that supports 128 bit encryption.

2) IE options were already as stated

3) Date, Time and Time Zone are all correct.

I now receive "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable" when I try to access any anti virus websites - I have disabled both McAfee Firewall and AntiVirus.

Why do you think that COM services try to access the internet when I visit anti virus related websites but NOT other websites?

Ah I understand now...could you give me the address of any other sites that use HTTPS so that I could try them.....?

Try ordering something from Amazon.com
You do not have to complete the transaction.
