I had a lot of problems with ARCServe being unable to open particular files which turned out to be due to a user on the network going home leaving his pc logged out but with the offending files open.

If you go into modify job, in the destination tab where it says media just put in a * it leaves the tape name alone and writes to whatever media is in the drive.
Not a very efficient way of doing things but.... the message comes from the system administrator so you could have copies of all system administrators mails sent to you
Have you got an interface such as McAfee TVD Web Shield running which is sitting between? If so you need to configure the interface to collect mail (port 25) and the exchange server to collect from port 1025
