A 49.xxxx error is a communication error. When you say that a restart clears the error message this means that there probably is a specific print job causing the issue.
Try using another driver (PCL5e or PS).
The tool that came with the jetdirect is an old version of HP Install Network Printer Wizard. This could also be used, but it really is doing it the hard way.

You can change it using the Jetdirect 170x embedded webserver. Just use a webbrowser and type in the IP address to the jetdirect. You should be able to change IP/subnet/gateway on the box here.
Make sure you have java installed on your computer (http://java.sun.com). Did you install the software with your firewall and antivirus/spyware turned off?

Try to print a configuration page from the information menu on the printer and see if you get a complete or incomplete print then? If you only get incomplete prints from your applications you should try to change the printer driver.
