Hi Folks,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this type of question. I use tek tips for exchange and sql server hope someone can help....

I have Xp pro and recently not for the first time it has started to freeze for about 2-3 mins at desktop as soon as it has booted some fuctions like my computer and run command from dos work instantly but network, dialup, antivirus too name a few refuse to work for about 2-3 mins then suddenly like a delayed reaction everything appears. This has happened to me before and I had to reinstall to fix the problem cant keep doing that need to fix it. I get the feeling the machine is infected but cant find anything. Antivirus not picking anything up and firewall not reporting any strange activity.

I have this type of problem also. In my case the foreground processes stop responding ( I can open other windows sometimes) no disk access, no network access then all starts again. I too have checked for viruses and spyware to no avail.

Are there any clues in your event viewer? This is not entirely uncommon with some versions of McAfee VS. Look in the system section for something like event 7022 'The McAfee Agent service hung on starting'

If this is the case, often an uninstall, reboot, reinstall will cure it.

Have been looking at the event viewer and cant find any errors in both application or system events. I use norton corporate edition for antivirus and have removed and reinstalled it.

DO you know what the process vpc32.exe does I found it and killed the process now it doesn't appear. When I checked online I was pointed towards a virus but it wasn't clear...

It appears that Vpc32.exe is part of Norton Anti Virus. The following site brings up lots of articles about Vpc32.exe if you search for it in Norton's Knowledge Base.

Try these three steps to improving things:

1. Start, Run, CMD and run regedit.
Find this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace
in the Registry.
Below that, there should be a key called {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. Just delete this, and after a restart, Windows will no longer check for scheduled tasks -a major performance improvement!

2. In Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, uncheck the first option box, "Automatically search network share..."

3. Download BOOTVIS.EXE from Microsoft. Select Tasks, Trace, and after a reboot, select Tasks, Optimize. Let it reboot.
