Does anyone know where the information on what is pinned to the start menu is located? For example, if you were to go to %UserProfile%\Desktop, you would see all the icons that are on the desktop. I need to find out the location of where the pinned icons is stored. The reason is because I am restricting a user that they can only see what I pin to the start menu. If I need to add another icon, I will have to remove all the restrictions, delete their profile, pin the new icon, and re-apply the restrictions. I'd appreciate any help.

They way my system is "setup"\"working" I have 3 possible places for Start menu shortcuts to exist.

Default User profile
All Users profile
Individual User profile

I fail to see how the shortcuts you are wanting to "remove" can not be listed in at LEAST one of the above folders.

Have you done a file search for any of the shortcuts?

Here's a useful bit of information... I pinned a shortcut to the startmenu and renamed it to lqc2003.. The original name was Logitech QuickCam...

I ran search for it and found one copy

It renamed the file in my All Programs >> Logitech folder..

So apparently XP gets that list from a database... like not actual files..

Ah....are you speaking of the "left hand pane" of the Start Menu? (The "most recently accessed" programs list?)

If so, right click on this pane and choose properties. From the Start Menu tab click customize. Set the # of programs on start menu to ZERO. This will keep that pane empty, unless you manually add something to the list.

I did a search of my C: and I could not find it. I gave it a unique name and I still could not find it. I did a search of *.lnk and all my shortcuts came up except those that I pinned to the start menu. Fascinating!!! Isn't it?
