In my enthusiasm, I did forget to mention that as a beta, you really shouldn't put this on a production system - unless you are willing to possibly lose some work, and you have excellent backups!
Wayne,
No, you can run 9.0 along side any other version of VFP, as long as you keep separate FoxUser files (and don't install it in the same directory ). Since some things get converted (depending on what version you are coming from), it's always good to make a copy of any project and it's supporting files if you want to try it out on "old" code.
Note: If you don't have the disk space or don't want to "mess up" your system for a full beta install, consider just downloading "VFP9RELNOTES.EXE" (2,568KB or 5.17MB expanded). It's just a simple self-extracting ZIP file that has "most" of the information on the new features. However, once you start reading and understanding what's there, I think you'll find it hard to resist downloading the rest and "playing"!
Thanks for the post, Rick. There's enough new features in this release to keep us busy for weeks to come. I know how I'll be spending my weekend.
I see that the download size is pushing 100 MB. Even with a fast broadband connection, you'll need to allow plenty of time for the download. Don't even think about it if you are using 56K dial-up.
I was under the impression that Visual FoxPro 8 (and of course now 9 beta) specified that it required 2000sp2+/XP/Server2003 for development but that it would create applications that ran on older Win98/98se/Me as well. So was I wrong when I thought I must upgrade from WinMe?
I'm still running WinMe with VFP 6, holding out for 9.
dbMark,
You are correct, the Developer / End User requirements for VFP 9.0 (beta) are essentially the same as VFP 8.0. However due to more Intellisense and Background Compilation, it may require a bit more processor. And because of a number of "hardcoded" limits being lifted, your lack of memory can provide an artificial limit. (e.g. Array size.)
May I presume you AREN'T running Windows 2000 SP3+, XP or Win 2003? All these OS versions have that DLL as part of the system files, and these are the only supported OSs for the development environment. The created apps will run on all but Win 95 and Win NT. (ISE will install a RunTime version of GDIPLUS.DLL for the OSs that don't normally include it. 95/NT can't support it.)
That being said, others have made VFP 8.0 and the 9.0 beta work on other platforms, but they aren't supported and really defeat the purpose of a beta - to determine if it works as documented and expected on the designated OSs.
