I'm having an tough time getting a straight answer regarding this process. We have a system with a preferred edition license and an 8.1 upgrade license. The system is on 7.0 today, which didn't require an Essential Edition license. According to Avaya documentation, a "virtual Essential Edition" license will get created when we upgrade from 7.0 to 8.1.

On the other hand, I have seen documentation that an Essential Edition license is required. Any input or experience with this is appreciated.

It "should" indeed generate a virtual essential licence (I've never had it not work). However if at some point in the future you need to swap the chassis out the licence will be gone with it :)

We tend to buy essential license on our upgrades due to the fact the virtual license is tied to the chassis, and if anything happens to that IPO then you will need it when you replace the chassis. Future proofing is always a good idea.

Thank you for the replies. amriddle01, do you recommend going from 7.0 to 8.0 first? Or just straight to 8.1?

It certainly can't hurt, if you just use the bin files and don't bother uploading all the system/phone/VM files etc, then recreate the SD card with the relevant 8.1 Manager it will only add 2-3 mins the process :)

I would go through 8.0 personally just to make sure the virtual essential edition license is created properly.

I would buy an essential edition license just to be sure.
Time is money too.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!
