I am having trouble logging into my WindowsXP home edition. When I start the computer it loads and displays the Welcome screen where you can click on the user(s) icon to load XP settings of that particular user. However when I click it, it goes into the desktop but immediately comes out of it to the welcome screen again and says logging off settings saved. I think I am missing a dll that loads the settings of the XP. I tried running the xp in Safe mode
with an administrator account, but it still gave me the same message and didn't go into the desktop. Moreover, I have tried running the System Restore tool from the options in command prompt screen (screen you see if you press F8 while starting the computer). It did not do anything. Do you have any suggestions.

The following information should get you sorted, it is courtesy of MS MVP Kelly from
A User Logon Request Is Rejected Without Any Messages

If the above is not the case:

This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set
to
"wsupdater.exe," and not "userinit.exe,".

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)

Or:

Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe
to wsaupdater.exe

From here, you can either opt to slave the drive and then use:

Editing the Registry for "other" Users

Then:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)

Or:

Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe
to wsaupdater.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode and modify:

change userinit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon from wsaupdater.exe, to userinit.exe,

Added info:

Recovering XP using the Recover Console (Line 333) Right hand side:

The problem can be fixed by:

1) booting to a Recovery Console,
2) changing directory to C:\WINDOWS\System32, and
3) copying userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe (there was no wsaupdater.exe
present).
4) rebooted into Safe mode and successfully logged-on as Adminstrator
5) edit the registry and change userinit in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon from "wsaupdater.exe," to "userinit.exe,";
6) final reboot and back to normal!

gpalmer711,

I do think the registry edit is slightly more complicated than you represented above. See my second link.

You know I love and respect you big guy,
Bill

Hey I agree with you, I personally do not use this method. However Kelly recommended it to me and who am I to argue [bigsmile]

And I am never offended when you correct me, I just remove an amount from the seattle beer fund that I set aside to repay you.

Currently standing at £1.50 [tongue]

In deference to my many UK friends, I do not drink cheap lager, beer or ales. Nor contribute to their popularity.

I might be able to purchase a cheap advertising bar coaster with gpalmer711's budget allowed me above.

Well i'm a tee-totaller so i'll allow you my drinks budget as well. Will £5 do you? With exchange rate the way they are at the moment by then it should be $20 [bigsmile]

Thank you guys. I will try what you have suggested. Thanks once again.
