hey guys,

I have a problem connecting two computers together using crossover cables. One of the computers can ping the other but the other cannot ping, so it seems that the cables are good right? i have set the work group name to the exact same name ¨jonathan¨. the ip addresses are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 subnet masks are 255.255.255.0 and all firewalls and antiviruses are off (i turned them off from msconfig too to make sure)

Can you guys please tell me what im doing wrong? i am not using a hub or anything of the sort just the crossover cable, theyre connected to the ethernet cards on both computers and i have made sure that both allow computers to be connected to each other.......... help guys im at a loss to what i can do now........

thank you guys for all help..

Can both machines ping 127.0.0.1?

Do the ethernet card LED's confirm connection is OK?

It is not really possible in XP SP2 to fully turn the firewall off - so if ICMP is turned off or blocked that would explain it.

It would help if you reported which network services are running etc etc.

I have been known to be wrong.
The best way to thank someone who helps you is give them a star.

stduc,

Thanks for your reply, both computers can ping 127.0.0.1 and they both recognized they are connected, this computers are at my brothers house so cant see them right now, but he did tell me that if he put anything on shared files, he can see them from both computers, the only porblem is that one computer 1 cannot ping computer 2, but computer 2 can ping computer 1.

Hey how do i check if icmp is disabled? i cannot post what is in network services since the computers are in a different country, but ill try to get more info.

the computers seem to be connected just one cannot ping the other. but funny thing is that they can see all the shared info on both computers, they are trying to put them together so they can play a game on a network (ill find out the name of the game and post soon) thank for everything...

Sounds a bit like some setting in a firewall or other software or hardware is still disabling ICMP packets.

Have you read any of these treads in your searching?

It definitely sounds like one is running a firewall (XP's built-in, ZoneAlarm, etc.) that's blocking the ping. I know you said you have it disabled, but maybe only partially. Uninstall all 3rd-party firewalls and reboot to be sure.

It would also help to know if both are running XP and are on Service Pack 2.
