Hi folks

I am running:
Intel Core i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 8,0GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

I have an application called Real Temp which monitors CPU temperature. Since I live in Western Australia, monitoring temperatures is a way of life. I have placed a shortcut to this application in
C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
but the program does not start (or even offer to start) on boot.

Two things:
1. The shortcut icon includes a shield quartered in yellow and blue.
2. When started manually Real Temp produces a dialog requesting permission to run.

How can I get this application to run on startup?

Thanks

The shield says "This program needs elevated privileges to run"

Two options.

1: Set it to run as THE Administrator.

or

2: Turn off the UAC.

Hi Chris

I knew there would be a way or two.
Would you mind explaining to an antediluvian like myself how I go about doing what you have suggested?
I have no idea what you are talking about.

Thanks

Right click the icon
Select Properties from the Context Menu.
Select the Compatibility Tab.
Click [ "Change Settings for all Usrs" ]
Check "Run this program as an administrator"

Then [ Ok ] on both dialogues.

And Bob's your what's it.

Thanks.
I'll give that a whirl.

Sadly, I have to report that checking "Run this program as a administrator" has had no effect.
Real Temp still does not start on boot.

Further, when starting the program manually I still get the permission query dialog.

Is it wise to turn off the UAC, and if so how do I do that?

Thanks

If you go to Start, Programs, Startup, Real Temp does it start up then? Just wondering whether there's something wrong with the shortcut.

The instructions for its use, say that for windows Vista and 7, you should use task scheduler to create a task for the application to run with a trigger at start up or log on.

The Application Compatibility Toolkit will let you set "startup" applications to bypass the UAC, setting your problem application to RunAsInvoker should cure it.

Thanks for the interest folks.

Nelviticus: Yes, Real Temp starts from there with the permission dialog.

rclarke250: Sorry, pal, but I don't understand what you are saying.

Chris: Yike! I downloaded ACT (and all the other bits and pieces while I was at it). That looks like a pretty major operation - I don't have a Doctorate in IT Management so its pretty daunting. I will check out the Configuration_and_Troubleshooting Manual but I must say I was hoping for something simpler. For one thing, it looks like I need MySQL on my system - is that right?

You only need SQL if it is used for a collaborative developer network.

Sorry, strongm, but that link takes me to The ThrottleStop Guide.

I went to Microsoft and followed the instructions to create a scheduled action for RealTemp.exe. It doesn't start the application on boot. [mad]

I went back to Scheduler and looked for the event I had created - could find nothing. Went through the process of creating another event with the same name and got spat out. The machine knows the event I created with the Basic Task Wizard exists, it just pays no attention to it. [evil]

RealTemp starts faultlessly from a desktop shortcut via a permission dialog. [morning]

And post #2 in that thread illustrates setting up RealTemp for the task scheduler

I don't understand quite what you mean by 'post number 2', but all the posts I see are about ThrottleStop.
I did searches for scheduler and RealTemp and Real Temp and found nothing of any interest - most of them are from people having problems with Vista.

Would you be so kind as to find the post to which you refer and post its URL. If it has the solution to this puzzle, I would dearly love to see it.
Thanks

Have you tried setting to start in the registry?

Add a string value in
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

Set the string value to the fully qualified path to the executable

>I don't understand quite what you mean

My link takes you to the first page of a forum.
Forum posts are in order on that page, starting with post number 1, which is numbered #1 (visible on the right in the post's header) which in turn leads to the second post (labelled as #2 in its header and which is date stamped 7th November 2010, 03:51 PM)

Post 2, although entitled "Re: The ThrottleStop Guide" is, in fact , all about RealTemp, as the post itself clearly states: "This example shows me adding RealTemp". The images in post 2 also clearly show it is for RealTemp.

The URL I posted is the one I meant.

Uh Huh! Sorry I missed that.

The only difference was checking the box for Run with highest privileges (or whatever it is). I deleted the task I had in place and created a new one, this time checking that box. Scheduler then asked me for an administrators password which I gave it and which it accepted.

I rebooted - and RealTemp did not start.

For the record, I have made an attempt to contact the people who produce RealTemp, unfortunately without success. I am beginning to think that there may be some setting in RealTemp which is holding things up.

Hi ChrisHirst

My technical expertise does not run to altering the Registry.
Can you give me a step-by-step to achieve what you are suggesting?
I have no idea why this program refuses to run when I want it to, and I'll give anything a go.
Thanks

Okay, I don't know what you are doing wrong, because I just downloaded the program, and place the unzipped folder on my D:\ drive, then I created a task to start at log on. It worked no problem.
