I read somewhere that only WindowsXP can create a Startup Disk with a new Chckdsk.exe file capable of checking NTFS partitions, unlike the one that is found in the Windows98 Startup Disk.
So I asked a friend to create one for me, because I have Windows 2000 with NTFS installed. The strange thing is that although my computer was able to startup from this disk, it has no ".EXE" files in it, also at the top of the DOS screen it said: "Windows Millenium".
I checked with my friend and he confirmed to me that he did use Windows XP to create this disk.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

JavierDL

its one of the strange quirks of xp.
you have to copy the Chckdsk.exe to the disk.
the NTFS partition cannot be seen without third party software from the DOS enviroment.
Chckdsk.exe can see the NTFS partition from the DOS enviroment.

Thanks for replying Firewolfrl :)
Could you tell me where exactly is this "Chckdsk.exe" file found?

Aside of Chckdsk.exe, is there any other executable worth copying?

thanks,

Do you know about recovery console? You can run a version of chkdsk from there.

chkdsk normally found here C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkdsk.exe - but as firewolfrl says, you need third party software to access NTFS from Dos (recovery console proably easier, plus it has a range of tools).

have a freeware which lets you read (not write) NTFS from dos - write version costs.

FYI, when you create a boot disk in XP, it uses Windows Me. BlackburnKL

Thank you kindly guys, Wolluf, and BlackburnKL.
Yes, I was aware of the console. I belive you need the Win2k CD to use it though. So I thought of preparing for a situation in which I didn't have even a CDrom player availbable (for whatever reason), then at least I would still have the option of running CHKDSK from a floppy.

Create Windows 2000/XP bootdisk
faq779-2276

Making a Boot Disk for Windows NT/2000/XP

The primary purpose of an MS-DOS boot disk is to boot for such procedures as upgrading your system ROM. If you need to boot into Windows XP (or 2000), you need a startup floppy disk. This kind of disk is only good for booting into XP/2000 when you have a damaged NTdetect file, or something of that nature.

To create this type of floppy, format the floppy in NT4/2000/XP. Copy Ntldr and Ntdetect.com to the floppy. Now, add a boot.ini file such as the one shown here.

[boot loader]

timeout=30

Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Windows XP"

If you're using NT or 2000, modify the lines appropriately. In NT and 2000, you need to change the default partition and the operating systems to Winnt.

If you want to view an NTFS volume, without actually booting into Windows, you'll need to get a copy of NTFDOS from Sysinternals at
Using Windows XP (or Windows 98), format a system floppy. Extract the NTFSDOS files to the floppy and then create an autoexec to run the program. All you need in the autoexec.bat file is the single line ntfsdos.

When you boot with this disk, you can read the NTFS disks on your system. You cannot copy files to the disks, but you can copy files from the NTFS disks to the floppy, or to any FAT 16 hard disks that you might have in your system. You might be able to copy to a FAT 32.

If you need to copy files to an NTFS disk, you can purchase NTFSDOS Professional for $299. This utility will allow you to both read and write NTFS disks from your floppy disk boot.

WOW!!
Talk about a complete and elaborate reply ;)
Thank you so much jonjontheMighty :)

I tried the link for the NTFDOS files, but it seems the link expired already :(
