Starting / Restarting just Apache?

Hello everyone!

I am quite new to my company and one of things they've had an issue with is the Nortel BCM 400 system (v3.7). It works great, but we can't change anything anymore, apparently it was a "java" issue, but I can see that Apache isnt' even started when I SSH into the system.

I believe it's conflicting with the other server we have that delivers our eCommerce solution, running on ports 80 and 443, which are the ports our system is trying to bind to as well as 6800.

I can't access any three of the ports and a netstat -a -b shows "FIN_WAIT_2"

It looks like a completely custom system, not based on AIX or a Linux kernel of sorts, so typical commands through a Putty terminal won't work.

I was wondering if there is a way to restart just Apache, as I've changed the httpd.conf to bind to 81 and 6800.

If there isn't a way, since I haven't rebooted one of these before, how long does it usually take? It seems logging into either FTP or SSH takes forever, signalling it's quite a slow system.

BCM 400 3.7 runs on NT. You need Element manager to access the system with the correct version of Java. Both are down loadable from the BCM using a browser and the IP address of BCM.

No Marv, Element Manager started at 4.0. (Linux versions)

3.7 is still browser based programming.
SSH is not for programming

Have you tried connecting the laptop to the OAM tech port on the BCM?
Use I.E. until you know you can get it working.

It might need a reboot (5 to 10 minutes) but there might be an issue with the Hard Drive.
You might need to call a tech to site.

I have, I connected my laptop (XP with the Java that should work) but wasn't able to get to the Internet Address at all.

The config file had it set to bind to:

- Port 80
- Port 443
- Port 6800

I believe it's conflicting, maybe I'm wrong, but it shouldn't load Apache if there is a confliction with ports, so Apache currently isn't running.

I can ping it, and get it to display in Element Manager, but as you were saying, it wouldn't work and I do get an error: Exception occurred when trying to connect Detector 'BCMDetector' cannot determine the device type for <IPAddress>.

So the restart should only take about 5-10 minutes then? If it's a hard drive issue, I'll call someone in, although it's been an ongoing issue for over a year now.

I don't think it's a Java issue

I pulled the config file from Apache on the server itself through FTP. the httpd.conf file shows where they input Alias's and if they bind to any ports.

I tried having a direct line from my laptop to the Lan 2: 10.10.11.1 (What it says there) but I wasn't able to get into it through there either.

Changed my IP on my laptop even to 10.10.11.10 with a default subnet in case and still nothing.

Update: Went into SSH again, through Diagnostics I was able to see the Apache service running, after changing the configuration I could stop/start it again, with no success. Back to the drawing board. Might just need to call in the pros.
 
If it's a 3.7 then you don't use element manager to log in. It's a web GUI interface.


Set your IP to 10.10.11.2, connect to LAN 2 (hopefully its default) and open internet explorer and type in 10.10.11.1 .. If all is good, you will get the security warning.. Make sure you select proceed.

I looked into the SSH and it seems Apache isn't started, hence why I can't access it.

I tried starting it and nothing, so I can't access the web interface at the moment.
 
There was a software patch/fix that was released a long, long time ago that resolved an Apache issue. I've only experienced it when replacing a drive and running the universal profile. I can't think of any 3.7 systems I have left out in the wild anymore, so I haven't seen this quit working spontaneously. It would be worth a shot to load it if you or your vendor have access to that.

couldn't you VNC into a BCM 3.x or was that only Enterprise Edge?
Something like TeirGR8 as the password?
 
A patch won't do any good if he can't even log in to load it.


I found an old thread where someone was having a similar issue.. Here is what he did "i did platform initialization with a ssh session and i could log in normally."

 
The BCM 2.X/3.X patches were executables that didn't require logging into the system to load it, as long as you had valid credentials.

The VNC password used a 'password of the day' mechanism by Nortel, but there are multiple VNC password reset utilities available that could be used.
 

I tried that, the system almost freezes after and does nothing. Quite unfortunate.


Hmm, I'll look into that, yeah the vendor we used to us is out of business, so I'm in the process of tracking someone down who can look at it.


Reboots did the trick? So it wasn't a bad HD after all for your client or it was? If it was a bad HD it should fail to load you would think
 

Ah that makes sense. I found a company that has tons of these machines still, which is fantastic. They should be able to help but in any case I'll contact you in case they can't!
