Starting / Restarting just Apache?

Hello everyone!

I am quite new to my company and one of things they've had an issue with is the Nortel BCM 400 system (v3.7). It works great, but we can't change anything anymore, apparently it was a "java" issue, but I can see that Apache isnt' even started when I SSH into the system.

I believe it's conflicting with the other server we have that delivers our eCommerce solution, running on ports 80 and 443, which are the ports our system is trying to bind to as well as 6800.

I can't access any three of the ports and a netstat -a -b shows "FIN_WAIT_2"

It looks like a completely custom system, not based on AIX or a Linux kernel of sorts, so typical commands through a Putty terminal won't work.

I was wondering if there is a way to restart just Apache, as I've changed the httpd.conf to bind to 81 and 6800.

If there isn't a way, since I haven't rebooted one of these before, how long does it usually take? It seems logging into either FTP or SSH takes forever, signalling it's quite a slow system.

Thanks!

Steve

Update: I rebooted the system after making a couple changes and got Apache to start no problem! However, a new problem appeared where I can't login to the Unified Manager, it says "In Progress..." and then freezes there.

*sigh* I will call them, it seems like it might be a hardware issue.

I've come into this thread a little late. The BCM 200/400 AND 1000 systems do require a cross over Ethernet cable if a direct connection is made.

On these old systems, I tend to access them via the comm port using a null modem adapter set at 9600 baud to see if I can log in and if the hard disk is OK. I also use it to change or view the IP addresses on either LAN ports 1 and 2.

As the systems were made many years ago, the original Maxtor 20 gig disks were prone to failing or becoming corrupted. Also problems with the insides clogging up with muck from the efficient fan that blows it all in doesn't help.

When I come across problems like this, I tend to power the BCM down and clean it all out using air a compressor where possible. It will take time, but it's better to be certain that all surfaces are clean.

Check that the hard disk is in good condition. Reconnect everything on the Motherboard. Have the serial port connected before you power up and for the Browser access, use an old computer. I have an old Dell laptop with two hard disks to swap over with either XP or Windows 98 on them so that I have a good chance of connecting onto them.

For the pre 4.0 versions, Windows NT was the build of software and these systems were very difficult to manage, but Browser access is your only choice whereas the later 4.0 Linux operating system had Element Manager to configure them.

It might be that the hard disk is corrupted. hope it isn't. Best of luck.
