[/b]Service Pack 4 (327194) Final[/b]

List of Bugs That Are Fixed in Windows 2000 sp4

Direct downloads:

Express Install, 600K
Network Install, 130MB

This should be up on the Windows update page and Win2k service packs page later if you want to wait.

Anyone else install this on a machine yet? I did, and so far:

Laptap standalone installation and one workstation on a domain installed.

Both came up with the Automatic Updates icon after reboot, which was disabled on the laptop manually and SHOULD BE disabled by group policy on the workstation.

Any other issues?

I'll wait for the other "Lead Shoe" to drop before I install it. It's from M$.

Installed on my laptop. So far, it's working OK.

Seems to have fixed the slowdown on Shutdown, that I was seeing. Also, it appears to actually be using the Hard Drive write cache correctly, which was "broken" in SP3.

It remains to be seen, what "Hotfix Horrors" MS will unleash on us, in the runup to SP5.

I tried posting something earlier but something happened and the ISP -- it fall down and go boom...

Anyway, I installed it on my home laptop and workstation, plus one workstation at work, and so far no major issues. Only thing I noticed so far was that it activates the Automatic Updates service, even if you have the service set to "disabled". I found that rather annoying. Either killing it manually or rebooting a second time, and the service is back on its leash, or group policy takes hold and keeps it there.

Do we even think there will *be* and SP5? Or should we just call that Windows 2003 professional? :)

SP4 is great! The system simply runs better. It shuts down far more quickly - saves settings in a trice. I haven't had a single problem (YET - fingers crossed). The automatic update service auto start is a very minor niggle and one that cannot easily escape attention since the icon shows itelf in the system tray. It's a price worth paying for SP4's apparent considerable benefits.

IE Explorer 6 (SP1) seems more reliable. MS seems to have addressed a whole lot of issues. I wonder how much XP is now in Win2K?

I would like to add an afterthought that it is possible that system faults prior to installation of SP4 might have unfortunate interactions with SP4. I would therefore suggest a fallback option like taking a Ghost image beforehand. Mine seems to have been unnecessary (so far).

I like this service pack a lot.

Here are the Hot Fixes for SP4. I think I counted about 62.

Please let me know if the suggestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.

I guess my next question, when people start throwing it on production machines --- has anyone used HFNetChk (pro or stardard) to deploy this service pack yet?

It amazes me how operating systems are absolutely riddled with bugs and yet they still work just fine.

The trouble with with bug fixes is that new bugs invariably result. You fix code and so break it.

I take it, Eguy, that you have totted up 62 known bugs resulting from the implementation of SP4. Is that is what is meant by 'Hot Fixes for SP4'?

Before we break out the "bubbly" on this one, skip over and read TonyBose's post at the bottom of thread616-588534

Backup, "early and often" !!

Interesting.

Can't tell if it's a dual-boot option, however, since my laptop runs just fine with a Win2k Pro partition AND Gentoo Linux. But, considering that GRUB handles the booting for either, that might be a non-issue for me.

I remember discussions from the SP3 days to install the network (file) version rather than going through Windows Update. That might be something to consider for this round.

I installed SP4 on 3 workstations and I don't have any problem. It didn't reactivate the Auto Update service.

Should I have waited to install SP4?

How long is a good wait before installing a SP anyway?

I began getting this error as soon as installed SP4:
The procedure entry point GetJobA could not be located in the dynamic link library SPOOLSS.dll

This error appears as soon as you log into my Windows 2000 workstation.

If I uninstall the Service Pack I do not get this error but I want to begin deploying this Service Pack because it has alot of new enhancements.

Does anyone have a fix? or Experienced the same thing?

littleonekat,

That particular function appears to be exported from WINSPOOL.DRV which on my SP4 machine is:

%systemroot%\System32 version 5.0.2195.6659

It's the part of SP4, so should be 112kb 06/19/2003

How do I do a Ghost image of my system before I install SP4?
Is the ghost of my intire system and folders?

I can't afford for SP4 to crash me. I've spent $1200 on crashes caused my who knows!

Thanks

Mapleleaf,

Thanks for your response back. I checked that file the files size and it has the files size that you specified but I found an additional winsrv.dll.000 with the same file size. Should I delete the second one or delete both and reboot?%-

Thanks

Littleonekat,

Highlight WINSPOOL.DRV, right-click and then Properties>Version. The SP4 one is 5.0.2195.6659.

The *.000 files are from previous SP's. If you choose to Archive, then the SP3 files should be in %systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$

Spoolss.dll should be version 5.0.2195.6699

The versions are important, since it looks like part of the spool was re-done for SP4.

An interesting question for you. Did you use the Express or Network install ??

I understand what you meant now. The spool files that I mention prior were NTClient Install Archived files. When I look in System32 for spoolss.dll the file size 80kb and it the version is 5.0.2195.6704. As for they way I downloaded it I went to the Windows Update website and Clicked Scan for New Updates and downloaded SP4. Instead of going to the support page and selecting the express or network install.

Do you think I should uninstall and install the Express Option of SP4 on the Support Website?

Thanks
