If you have recently encountered a slow shut down problem with your W2K system take heed. Uninstalling Windows security update Q329170 and Q328310 will most likely fix it.

This information came to me though this board from user "balls" (see post "Unable to logoff current user&quot

This fix worked for me. During uninstallation, you will be presented with a list of installed software that may not function properly if these updates are removed. I can not say if you will need to reinstall any software. I didnt need to. My system now boots down like it used to, in seconds not minutes.

Just thought I would mention that these updates were intended to slow down shutdown time, for fast processors to ensure hard drives have time to finish housekeeping, unneccesarily disabling them may result in data loss.

How would you know that.
The one you are mentioning, is a old fix for WinME, if I dont got it wrong.
Did you check what kind of configuration hotfix: q329170 is for, because that one is causing those long shutdown-/logou times. I've checked it out (practically).

Hey Bulk, gotta tell you that was an excellent tip!!! I tried this on my box at home first, and noticed the difference it took to shut it down....Then I tried it at work, and it worked quite well there...I then passed this info onto The Big Guy to let him know....

To address the issue of data loss, sure - you will be given a list of the other "fixes" and possibly software programs that supposedly will not run properly should you ditch these updates, but I haven't ran into that as of yet...My software still runs seemlessly...

The bigger issue for me was SP3 - it is most Eeee-vil...I've noticed that it doesn't like to "play well" with Lotus Notes and MS Office 2000...I've since ditched it, and went back to SP2...I will also tell you that I have since turned "off" the Automatic Update box in Control Panel, cuz if you have this running, unbeknownst (sp?) to you these horrid patches will be once again downloaded to your machine....

i created a profile here JUST to thank the great info i found about fixing this slow shutdown and startup.
it was affecting everything, it was like i was running with 64mb of ram.

Thanks Bulk (and all the guys!), because your fix was good for me too! It seems like Microsoft's fix Q329170 is not so good... Anyway I just wanted to say one more thing: i fixed the problem, just by removing Q329170 hotfix, and i still have the Q328310 installed...

Great tip. My wife's profile at home was taking 60+ seconds to log off. Only had to uninstall Q329170.

I must have some bad luck. I have removed both patches and still am experiencing this problem. At this point, I am uninstalling all of the patches individually to see what actually helps me.

There is another way around this one. Run gpedit.msc, go to computer configuration, admin templates, system, logon, Maximum retries to unload and update user profile properties. Enable this policy and set it to like 3. That speeds up the 60 second delay (the default number) that was being affected by the hotfix. I use it on all my images and it works like a charm.

There's another thread running on this same topic, but I'll just throw my bit in here as well:-

If you use the workaround (not a true fix!) to reduce the retries from 60 secs when trying to unload the registry, beware if you are using roaming profiles - your machine will likely shut down quicker, but your roaming profile will almost certainly NOT be written back.

My problem was specifically with the Logitech iTouch software, but the principle of not unloading the registry/writing roaming profile can still exist.

SP4 fixes this issue very well. Post SP4 Win2K shuts down in pretty short order.

OK so I have removed both Hotfixes but I still have an issue. I get the computer into shutdown mode and it logs off the user, says Windows is shutting down and the goes to a blank screen where the cursor is flashing in the top left hand corner. It can remains like this for hours (obviously not a new problem). If I enable restart from the start/shut down options then I have no issues.
Any ideas?

Just to further inform people of my experience, the problem with the 329170 patch is that Windows hangs while unloading the profile, at the point stating "Saving your settings." If this is a problem you have experience, uninstalling this patch will fix it... As echoecho said above, if this fails, run gpedit.msc, go to the following policy...
Local computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>System>Logon
Under maximum retries to unload and update user profile, enable it and set it to 5. Echoecho stated setting it to 3, I only tried it with a value of 5, seemed to help on one occasion.

This is for GRTGZU...where do I find Auto Updates in Windows 2000 so I can shut it off. Whenever I install an XP system, that is one of the first things I disable but have never seen it in W2K
