Could someone please advise me what cable do I need to run out the back of a Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop - the TV out being a seven pin connection to the TV being a 4 pin connection. I cannot find the 7 pin cable at all. It would appear the 4 pin normal S-Video plug will plug into the same socket, but of course there will still be 3 pins short. Will it still work???
Please help as I have had the salesman runaround for days now.

Hi RJG_

first of all, s-video to scart is only usefull when your tv already supports s-video... it means that one of the scart entries on your tv can be configured for s-video mode... and usually you also have an s-video entry...

As mentioned above by AcE_IoXx (and completed by me), the outer 4 pins are for luminance+chrominance, which is not correctly interpreted by «older/cheaper» tvs that don't include a s-video entry. The inner 3 (plus another as you can see above) are for composite video (like the yellow RCA you know) and that's compatible with all kinds of tvs...

Most s-video to scart converters only use the 4 outer pins, so you'll only get a black/white image...

If you follow the instructions from AcE_IoXx (and me) above, you'll get full color image.

I hope this helps...

hello i got a problem. i bought a sony vaio laptop. it has got a tv outlet, but unless other tv outlet its just a simple one it looks something like where you plug your microphone or speakers into. but it is a tv outlet. it said so in the instruction and on the outlet itself. so i was trying to find the plug but the shop where i bought the laptop does not have it. and since i dont know how the plug looks like physically i cannot find it in other computer shops. so if anyone knows the type of the outlets im talking about please reply. coz i really want to connect my laptop to the tv... thanx in advance.

I have an svideo 7 pin laptop that I want to connect to a 4pin tv. I had an HP one that worked fine, but then I got a Toshiba one that gives me a black and white picture. I am using a 4 pin to 4 pin svideo cable from Radio Shack that worked fine for the HP but not for the Toshiba. Any suggestions?

MAx Mirnii,
You have to get a Sony AV cable similar to the one supplied bythe Digital camcorders wherein you have a single headphone type jack on one end and three stubs on the other ( Video, AudioL and Audio R).Sony part no VM<C-20FR. Then you have to use the Fn F7 button on the keyboard to switch between the two.

I am trying to wire a 4 pin s-video to scart. Does anyone how to do it? Which pin goes where? Thanks in advance.

Hi Gmcmen.

You can check

for the pin-out in scart side. But I must remind you that the four outer pins in s-video will only work in a TV that already supports s-video, otherwise all you'll get is black/white.
For the pin-out of s-video side, you have a couple in this thread...

If your TV doesn't support s-video, you have to use the recommendations in this thread...

Hope this helps...

Thanks BigBAdBoy will give it a try. The tv does not have a s-video socket, but on one of the scart sockets it reads "RGB input" so i am living in hope! Thanks again.

Gmcmen,

If you tv doesn't have s-video, you'll only get black/white image from the 4 pin (outer pins) connection...

But, if you can find a 7 pin s-video plug, you can send composite video (RGB) to the scart plug by using the following schema:

RGB switching control
-connect pin 1 to pin 18 of the scart connector
-connect pin 5 to pin 16 of the scart connector
Composite Video
-connect pin 6 to pin 20 of the scart connector
-connect pin 7 to pin 17 of the scart connector

on you can find an image of s-video with pin numbers...

It's working for me, although I still don't have the 7 pin svideo (I connect the wires directly for now...).

Hope this helps...

IS there a cord that i can connect my Dell laptop s video to my sony tv yellow video insert, so that i can see my screen on tv?

Geez will this thread never die? My dell inspiron 4000 came with a cable that plugs into the video out mini din plug and had a yellow composite video connector. Can't find it right now, but maybe look on the Dell web site under your model number.

Good Luck It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

Hi,

I've been doing some more research and I found 2 sites with schemas for converting 4-pin s-video to composite video.

It's a lot simpler than I thought...

The second explains a little better what it does... while the first creates a converter to scart ...

I tried it without the capacitor (included in the 2nd) and it worked fine...

I hope this helps...

Hey,
I am having a little trouble connecting my laptop to the tv. I have a Dell Insipron 4100 and I have connected it to the tv using scart and audio cables. I am completly computer illeterate and need help. I am sure I have the right cables but am not sure how to get the picture to come up on the tv. Is there a toggle button to switch to tv. I get no picture or sound. If it is possible can someone help me with a step-by-step account of what I should be doing. I just want to watch videos on a bigger screen. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron, I have successfully been able to get my desktop image onto my TV using a S-video 4 pin into a RCA converter into the yellow RCA Video plug on my Toshiba TV. But whenever I play a DVD I get a blank gray box on the TV where the image should be. Any ideas? Is this a refresh issue?

the reason you cant see the dvd on your tv is because it player uses an overlay, some graphics cards you can set up to display the overlay on the tv, but it depends on the video card you have. as for disabling the overlay, that could be hard as its used by nearly every dvd playing program out there.

I have A Dell Insipron 4100 and have succesfully connected it to the tv. Though again as described throughout this thread I can only get black and white. I connected s-video and sound. I was wondering if anyone has found an answer to this problem yet.
Thank You

I've got a laptop that is a generic brand. It's got a s-video port. It has a DVD drive. I don't know whether it has a TV card in it. I can't find any options to send the signal. I can't set up a second monitor in the advanced tab of the properties etc. How do I know whether I can connect to the TV?

I have a SCART plug that converts to s-video for the TV. I use my headphone socket for the sound.

But I get nothing on the TV because I don't think my laptop is sending the signal. Can someone help?

PS. I have windows XP installed.

Thanks in advance

I'm trying to coect my Sony VAIO GRX (WIN XP Proffessional) to a Thomson TV . I am using a standard S-Video cable. I can connect either directly to the S-Video socket on the front, or via a SCART adapter to the Scart socket. In either case, I can see the laptop's desktop on the TV screen except for the WinDVD window that is playing a DVD - the window is just black on the TV screen while its OK on the laptop. If I change the app to be full screen, the whole TV screen in black ! Any body any ideas??

Anyone who is getting a Blank screen on the TV using a DVD player software but a piture on there laptop.

In the Display settings of your laptop.

Change the Primary display to be the TV and not the LCD.

Most DVD playijng software draws only to the primary display and not teh secondary diaplay.

This works for me.
Now all I gotta do is get in colour.

From what I have read here, it looks like I gotta make my own S-Video to RCA lead
