Could someone please advise me what cable do I need to run out the back of a Dell Inspiron 5000 Laptop - the TV out being a seven pin connection to the TV being a 4 pin connection. I cannot find the 7 pin cable at all. It would appear the 4 pin normal S-Video plug will plug into the same socket, but of course there will still be 3 pins short. Will it still work???
Please help as I have had the salesman runaround for days now.

Hi,
I have a Dell inspiron 4100 laptop with 7 pin s-Video Cable, .I bought a 4 pin S Video Cable from Maplin and it does not work (Rather i should put , i m not able to make it work !!!)..I cant c anything when connected to TV.My TV is panasonic .Tried adjusting all Display , colour Parameters..but in vain..Its really painful not cing ur DVD keeping it in the desk for ages n ages..!!!!
Any ideas

when you get a black/white screen your tv uses composit in stead of s-video (what the outer 4 pins are for) the 3 in the inside are for composit (bit older then s-video)
with some tv's you can change the setting for s-video or composit
if your tv dosn't support s-video (like mine ( i also got black and white screen with the s-video to scart kabel))you can make your own.
just go to your local elektronics shop and by a scart plug a 7 pins s-video with composit connector (dosn't mather if you mis the outer 4 pins just the 3 on the inside are important.

by a GOOD cable for these kind of things and connect them

on you can see a picture of the part that's on the computer pin 5 6 and 7 are for composit the rest is for s-video
connect pin 5 to pin 16 of the scart connector
connect pin 6 to pin 20 of the scart connector
connect pin 7 to pin 17 of the scart connector

this way it wil work with all tv's supporting scart

Hi,

I tried this configuration but, in order to have the notebook recognize the TV, you also need to connect Pin 1 to pin 18 of the scart connector. This is because pin 16 and 18 of the scart connector are for RGB switching control (and ground!).

So, you would get:
RGB switching control
-connect pin 1 to pin 18 of the scart connector
-connect pin 5 to pin 16 of the scart connector
Composite Video
-connect pin 6 to pin 20 of the scart connector
-connect pin 7 to pin 17 of the scart connector

BTW, i'm using CAT5 cable twisted pair (the other 2 pairs I'm using to connect Audio...) and it seems to work fine... no need for expensive cables...

I'm connecting my laptop from a 4 pin S-Video out to a 4 pin S-Video in on a Sony Trinitron TV. This worked fine until recently. Now all of a sudden the picture is only in black and white and no changing of resolutions or number of colors displayed will fix it. I've tried reseating the cables and turning the TV on and off. All I get is black and white. Anyone have any ideas why color would just all of a sudden stop working and any suggestions on restoring color?

I'm trying to coect my Dell Inspiron 5000e to a Panasonic TV. I am using a standard S-Video cable. I can connect either directly to the S-Video socket on the front, or via a SCART adapter to the Scart socket. In either case, I can see the laptop's desktop on the TV screen except for the WinDVD window that is playing a DVD - the window is just black on the TV screen while its OK on the laptop. If I change the app to be full screen, the whole TV screen in blank - all I can see is the mouse!!! Any body any ideas??

I had the same problem connecting an Inspiron 5000 to a tv (svideo/scart cable. You can solve the black and white issue quite easily:*Note / this will also solve anz problems zou have playing dvd etc.
To connect to the tv:
Start - Settings - Display - Settings - Display - Advanced (bottom right hand side)

When you get this far, you'll have to change the primary monitor settings, so that the tv is the primary. Then you'll have to 'turn off' the monitor of the laptop by selecting the button on the screen (self explanatory when you get this far). This should sort it out for you. If not, change to Linux!

i got the 7pin s-video to 7pin s-video connection, plays movies fine, but the sound comes from the laptop and not from the tv...what can i do to fix this?

My radeon card has the 7 pin connector, and i had the cable but do to a 120v short (long story, just involved a big fan) i fried that output. But my primary Nvidia Geforce3 card has the normal 4 pin....i haven't tried to use it becuase i fried the imput on my tv too......but i'm going to get a 4pin s-video to rca converter....i'll let you know how it goes...

I have a Compaq Presario 700 and i was wondering what do i need to connect this laptop to the TV the laptop has a S-Video port but no phono sockets and i tried a lead which did not work, i wish to view DVDs on the tv.

Hey can anybody help me, I have a seven pin s-video on my laptop and a 4 pin s-video Sony Trinitron TV. I tried using a 4-pin s-video cable and all I get is just a black screen. What do I need to get a picture, is there a setting on my pc that I need to change

Having read these posts and searched the web, the best I could come up with for the pinouts for a laptop 7-pin mini-din were... (I am using a IBM T20)

S-video Function

1 . . . . Luma ground
2 . . . . Chroma ground
3 . . . . Luma
4 . . . . Chroma
5 . . . . (blanking ??)
6 . . . . Composite video
7 . . . . Composite ground

according to the pin numbering on
Is this correct?
Why is there a 'blanking' signal? Surely this is a bit of a waste on a connector with so few pins?

Also, probing around with a CRO seems that pin 5 is composite video, and then what would pin 6 be???

Lots of questions - looking for (technical) answers.

Thanks

I have a ProStar laptop with S-video out through an SiS graphics adapter. I'm using a multi-switcher, as my TV does not have direct-input S-video, so in a sense I'm trying to go from S-video to Red/White/Yellow. Is this possible, because I'm not seeing anything on the screen?

I'm also having the same black and white problem, i've got two laptops an IBM T23 and a Advent/Gericom. I've try connecting both of these to my Sony KD28FX via a 4pin svideo cable into the svideo input at the front of the TV but all i ever get it a black and white image!

I've been looking all over but still haven't sorted it yet, any ideas?

all i want to do is watch my dvds on my tv by my sisters compaq lap top 4000 i think, its got a s-video on the back of the lap top wat cable do i need to plug into my tv which has scart not them coloured wires

In reference to the Presario1720 to HDTV (Visitor) post on Jul 18, 2002:

If your computer is playing the video's fine through the S_Video Cable, then the fix to get sound to the TV should be easy. All you need is an adapter that goes from 1\8 inch to stereo RCA (red and white) plugs. The 1\8inch plug is the exact same plug headphones use. All you do is plug the 1/8 inch plug into the headphone jack or speaker output jack of the computer. Then you take the RCA (red and white) ends and put them into the back of your TV. This cable can be purchased at any radioshack. It should come in varying lengths, or the salespeople can help you get extensions for them.

Here's a link from RadioShack showing a picture of the cable needed.

I hope this helps

Can anyone tell me where I can get a cable for my IBM Thinkpad T20 - the cable being s-video (7 pin) to phono/scart.

I have seen links to suppliers, but they are in the US.
Are there any suppliers in London/UK?

I have the same problem, connecting my Compaq Presario 2700 to the TV using S-video to RCA. On the desplay settings, I selected the TV as my main display device. I also tried to change the TV settings form PAL, NTSC to AUTO. I only get a black and white image on the TV and sound only form the laptop

Any Ideas???

as far as I can tell...

the s-video transfers PITCHER only. the sound has to be taken from, like the dude up there says, the headphone socket.

I have a thing I bought in PC WORLD [UK] it has s-video->s-video connector and headphone jack->red+white audio and a scart bit that the three of these plug into. the scart adaptor also has a yellow video port. it cost twenty-five quid, by the way.

I'm trying to connect my laptop, I guess it has some SiS graphics THING inside of it. searching through things in windows I found a, yeah, thing that lets me switch something. like. there's a bit that says "TV OUTPUT" but it's sort of fainted and I can't click it. clicking another bit I can switch from my laptop's LCD to 'TV'. it flickers then I get the pitcher on the TV...w/ sound [via headphone] but! it IS black and white. how come?? hey? how come...?

:(

some on-the-whole unhelpful dude at ADVENT computers told me I need a scart adaptor device that also CONERTS some crap.

huh.

he was all asking me what type of television I have.
