I have a program in the msconfig startup but I have uninstalled the program. How can I get the entry out of the startup?

Also, I don't use "Windows Messenger" and the icon is on the task bar. How can I get it off? It must use memory while there.

thanks in advance.

Open windows messenger, Click toold, click Options, choose the preferences tab, uncheck run this program when windows starts.

Somtimes, the easy answer is the hardest to find. :)

Still under construction ...

It's not very easy to get rid of messenger.
see this thread thread779-707409
Also look at Greg Palmers Faq on the removing messenger.

To clear Msconfig entries that are unticked but still appear:

Start, run regedit.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig
Look under Startupfolder, and in startupreg and remove these dead entries.

how do you clear dead entires from start/programs which have been deleted but still there in start/programs?

Open regedit and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

And the other run keys runonce etc.

look for the disabled lines in the keys ending with a minus sign (-).

Delete in right pane if found .

cheers syar, I checked in the reg keys and couldn't find the entries, I had lotus smart sute and deleted it through add/remove, but it's still showing in start/programs.

cheers pech

If it is showing in the All Programs listing of your Start Menu, right-click the Start Button, Explore All Users, and delete the entries. They can be pulled from the program shortcut menu in the profile for either the individual user, or the All Users profile.

It should state in msconfig where it's launced from(loacation) .
And as Bill say it could aswell be from /all users/startup ,or individual.
In msconfig e.g location=common equals /all users/startup (if it's still listed)

Thanks RebeccaLynn. The steps i used was

open messenger on taskbar/tools/options/uncheck the first two items/exit. This removes the icon from the taskbar.

I have not done any of the other steps yet. Kudos to you.
