Since technology is so integrated into production these days, what is the product packaging trend for the next 5 years, as far as technology is concerned.

I have read all about RFID complimenting the older bar-code technology with an abundance of information. I have read about smarter packaging material and methods to fight off baterial growth.

My question is for those of you who work in the packaging business. What other trends are there besides what I have mentioned?

Thanks in advance.

More difficulty in finding a company that can package your product in just a simple cardboard box.

That's not the problem, many companies can box your product. The problem is that when the end user gets to open the box, is your product in the same condition as it was before it went in the box?

Either that or it's packaged in one of those semi-rigid, plastic formed things that requires power tools to open.

In software: it's all about downloading and not shipping physical media.

Look for security/anti-counterfeiting enhancements, including merchandise tags with readable information embedded in the ink itself (not just the visible barcode info).

I despise those. I'd be interested to see some statistics from hospital emergency rooms on how many severe lacerations they see due to those packages.

Not to mention how many products are damaged in the process of trying to get them out of the package...

It's pretty sad though that shoplifters can get the package open in a couple of seconds.

hahaha

thanks guys you are hilarious.

I can only tell, the packaging trend will go as far as price drops technology and materials. Smarter packaging such as tracking capabilities, extra information, and self reporting will be on the rise, all constrained by cost, of course.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Grenage,

I always wondered what the little cutting wheels were for.

blutekhnd,

They can certainly serve few other purposes ;)
