Note the use of the term "expert" in the ad and compare that to the rate they're offering. They have another position that pays even less.

I've seen one other posting in my area similar to this that's been up for a couple of months. That company is probaby wondering where all the unemployed talent is.

Is there a lot of this in other cities as well? I'm curious.

That second job is a clerical job. $10-15 is reasonable. A high school graduate would be very capabale of "reviewing text," "scanning images," and "answering telephones."

Most companies who put something like "HTML Perl Expert for e-commerce site" means that they want you to write a site with a shopping basket and credit card capabilities. They'll probably give him/her a few months, when a true "expert" could have it up in weeks. Don't take ads at face value... read between the lines.

jwenting... sorry that you're doing this in Java and getting paid similarly. But like you said, at least you're in IT, and if you keep looking at least your skills are current.

What I find interesting is that I live in a technological wasteland (fair sized city, 4 web companies in town, maybe 5 repait/parts stores/tech companies, couple manufacturing plants, one software company soon to be two) and I have seen a similar ad recently for a Perl on *nix expert to do web development for $10/hr. Then again, hosting websites locally also costs an arm and a leg, basic acct $25/mnth no database (extra $15/mnth), one email acct..ie very basic.

And cost of living is fairly high here (though not by California std's) due to being a beach/retirement town.

Anmd I don't know whart the point of this addition was, but maybe someone will find something interesting in there :)

Tarwn -
People are charging $80/hr for pc support to Bald Head Island residents. You ought to get in on some of that - post a flyer in their shopping center. Of course, some of that has to go to taking the ferry...
