Poor transcripting

I had to re-read this more than once in order to decipher that it wasn't the president and the senator hoping together.

I think there is some missing punctuation. What if it read,

"I would seriously hope that the president -- and I really don't have much hope -- but I wish the president had taken another look at this and found us someone else".

When you consider the mis-placed quotes, the improper use of capitalization, and what I'm guessing is a lack a punctuation identifying a pause duing the speech, you really have to wonder about the editing being done at ABC News.
