I just assembled a new pc. Booted fine and i installed Windows XP and some apps. All of a sudden the pc kept shutting down and rebooting. I replaced the memory and psu and that wasnt it. I'm thinking its a voltage problem or possibly the cpu (AMD Sempron 2600) or the mobo ECS K8M800-M2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to boot of the Windows XP CD? If you are, try doing a repair install to fix any software issues.

I like children. If they're properly cooked.

Have you had a look at possible overheating of the CPU. I have had a similar problem with an P4 machine caused by knocking one of the hold-down clamps(which resulted in pood contact between the heat sink and CPU) and an AMD machine that someone had put insufficent thermal paste between the heatsink and cpu

software boots up fine before it shuts down so im guessing its not a windows problem..ill check the hold down clamps on my cpu.

badbigben (is this a Steelers reference?) LOL

ok i tried to boot in safe mode and it wouldnt even allow me.
It reboots before the Windows Splash screen appears.

Any ideas?

ok i replace the power supply afterward it would begain to boot up but always stop on the black screen, and then restart itself with long beep. then it got to the point it would show on the moniter no sign and every second long beeps someone please lend a helping hand

Ok, is the OS a new install or was it previously installed on another PC? if Yes, you will need to do a clean install, ergo start from scratch...

PS: reference to Steelers? nope, I'm 6'4" tall, weight in at 240 lbs. = Big, I am a Biker and Computernut = Bad, and my name is Ben... LOL...

BadBigBen,

It is a clean install. I built this PC from scratch. First time this has ever happened.

Ok, give me some specs on the PC...

ie. Mobo, CPU, RAM, PSU, PCI and AGP cards... oh yeah and what type of HD you are using...

Ben

CPU: AMD Sempron 2600
Mobo ECS K8M800-M2
HD: WD600BB
Video: Sapphire ATI Radeon 9250 128MB AGP
CDR: Lite-On SOHR-5238S 52X32X52
Memory: Samsung 512MB PC2700 333MHz DDR..tested others and it was fine.
PSU 500W came with case..although i tested the one on this pc and it was fine.

Ok, another question, the Win XP is it with integrated SP2 or not?

Try a Repair Install, kinda like if you are going to do an install but choose the Repair Option...

Installed Windows XP Pro from scratch. I was running a Trendmicro Virus scan when it rebooted. Then I tried running the SP2 from another disc Microsoft sent me. It is not intergrated in the Win XP Pro I installed.

If you have only just set up this machine, I'd consider starting again from scratch. Then when adding new apps/drivers, do them one at a time and reboot after install, so if one is causing a problem, it should be obvious.

what if it reboots even when i try to reinstall windows?

Then you'd know definately that it is a Hardware Prob... so far it sounds all Software...

there are one or two restarts during installation... this is normal...

when you Re-install, wait with the SP2, until the very end for now... to see if the SP2 is the culprit... there have been many PC's that have had issues with SP2...

PS: in the BIOS Setup, load the Default values, then deactivate Virus Checking... set Plug and Play OS to NO, turn off SMART monitoring for the HD's...

Do you have AntiVirus turned on in the BIOS? If so disable it until XP is completely installed.

Tried to reinstall and i got this message now:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the STOP message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapter.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable
BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options and then select Safe Mode.
