Running Win98, first edition. Upgraded to IE6.0, which also upgraded Outlook Express to 6.0. At the same time, I added some memory, so I am up to 256MB RAM.

Since the first instance, OE6.0 was two-three times slower than OE5. Takes a long time to open the app; takes a long time to open a received message; takes a long time to open a new message window, etc. etc.

I have compacted folders three times, defragged the hard drive, closed some resident apps, and nothing seems to help improve the speed of OE6.0.

Since EMail is the number one reason I use my computer, I'd like to find a way to speed this app dramatically, or I'd like to replace it with a different mail app. (I do not want to lose my filed mail, or lose my address book.)

Any ideas?

Have you installed any anti virus software. This can bog down Outlook express if you have selected to scan incoming mail for virus's

kwunder

kwunder's got a point...if you are using Virus Scan, go to the properties of it and turn off scanning .dll files...

other wise, could be OE 6 is just slower than OE 5, it happens on product updates, MS try to make the product better, adding in new features etc, thus resulting in slower preformance.... Jay~

My new Tae Kwon Do website is up and running!!

I am not using any virus scan on email. This program seems to just be a dog... is anyone else seeing the same problem with OE6 being really slow?

Even though you are not directly using the Virus Scan on the email program, it may be effecting it, just try turning it off completely and see if it makes a difference, might not but worth a shot.

YES! I am having a problem with Outlook Express. After I installed IExplorer 6 (i didnt download outlook express with it) Outlook 5 was SUPER SLOW. So, I downloaded outlook 6 to go with IExplorer 6. Outlook 6 now loads the splash screen, then stops responding. PLEASE HELP. That is my favorite mail manager and the only thing I check my email with.

thanks

ok, i am the same person as the one above ( -ajent- ) I just registered. I realized that Outlook Express does load! but i have to look at that splash screen for about 1 min. and when I try to do anything like look at identities its super slow too. I'm only glad about 1 thing. Im not the only one this happened to. I thought I messed up my computer again. lol. if N E one can help that would be great.
thanks

ajent,
Run the restore previous config or repair feature for IE6 & IE tools. It is accesible from Settings/Add remove progs.

I have tried the repain just now....didnt work. Then I went back to IE 5.5 and Outlook 5. still slow.
thanks for trying though. I dont know what Im gonna do.

ajent,
Now you've reverted back to a previous version, go to the Microsoft website and download IE6. You have to download the setup file first. When you run this, you are asked what level of install you require (minimal or full etc) Choose full, but then importantly click on the ADVANCED button. From there select the DOWNLOAD COMPLETELY FOR LATER INSTALLATION option. This allows you to have a copy of the program to install without haveing to keep downloading it at a later date.

When you've downloaded it, Do a full install.
Then see if it's improved the speed of IE on your machine

ok, I tried that and everything installed except when it gets to mdac then a pdacset error pops up and says "This has been performed an illegal operation and must be shut down" I click on details and it says MDACSET cause an invalid page fault in module MDACSET.EXE at 0167:00401931
then it list Register address or something.
I tried running outlook w/o finishing the mdac install and it still runs slow.

It almost sounds like a anti-virus program may have been running during the install, or worse! A crash guard program. If ever anything will guarantee a crash its a crash guard program. To the problem at hand though,,,

Have you looked at
Some of that may be relevant to IE 6, its worth a try. Let us know if it's anyway near similar.

Woof!

I found this in my travels..i am yet to try it but have also experienced the same problem you described.

I found it on
Open up Register Editor by running "regedit" command. Click on "Edit" and select "Find". Copy and paste FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541 onto the "Find what" box and click on "Find Next". Once found, click on the plus sign in front of it and you will find InProc32 and LocalServer32. Select one of them then right click on default under the name column and select "modify", then simply delete what's in the Value Data box. Repeat for the other.

Outlook Express opens slowly after changing from McAfee Antivirus to Norton AntiVirus

Situation:
You changed your antivirus software from McAfee Antivirus to Norton AntiVirus. When you start Microsoft Outlook Express, it takes much longer to open than it did before.

Solution:
This can happen if the McAfee uninstallation removed the Imagehlp.dll file from Windows. If this file is missing or damaged, then Outlook Express will take a long time to start. You must restore this file to fix the problem. Please follow the instructions for your operating system. You will need your Windows installation CD.

Hope this helps

Checkout MS Knowledge base article #Q271510. It relates to the PStore files. Sounds like it might be similar to your issue.

Here is the fix that worked for me.

I did a search on microsoft's support center and I found the fix!

There are two solutions, the SECOND one (#2, editing the registry) worked for me:

============================================================

SYMPTOMS
Outlook Express may be very slow when you try to open it, create a new mail message, or switch identities.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur for one of the following reasons:

The Pstores.exe file and associated .dll files may be corrupted, or their versions may be incorrect.

-or-

The ProtectedStorage registry key has incorrect parameters.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:

#1 Rename the Pstore.log file, and obtain a new copy of the Pstores.exe file and associated files.

-or-

#2 Delete, and then re-create the ProtectedStorage registry key.

------------------------------------------------------------

Fix #1

Rename the Pstore.log File
Search for a Pstore.log file. If you do not find the file, skip to the next section. If you find it, rename it:
Click Start , point to Files , and then click Files or Folders .

In the Named field, type pstore.log .

Verify that the Look In field displays your primary hard drive (usually C), and then click Find Now .

Right-click the pstore.log file found in the search, and then click Rename .

Rename the file "pstoreold.log" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

Obtain a New Copy of Pstores.exe and Associated Files
To obtain a new copy of the Pstores.exe file and associated files, reinstall Microsoft Internet Explorer. For information about installing or reinstalling Internet Explorer, please see the "Internet Explorer Setup Frequently Asked Questions" page at the following Microsoft

Web site:

------------------------------------------------------------

Fix #2

Delete the ProtectedStorage Registry Key

WARNING : Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

Delete the ProtectedStorage registry key by using the following method:
Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then click OK .

Locate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
Find the ProtectedStorage key, right-click it, and then click Delete .

Quit Registry Editor.

Re-Create the ProtectedStorage Registry Key
To re-create the ProtectedStorage registry key:
Click Start , point to Programs , and then click MS DOS Prompt .

In the MS-DOS Prompt window, type the following command
c:\windows\system\pstores.exe -install
and then press ENTER.

Type exit , and then press ENTER to close the MS-DOS Prompt window.

Quit all programs, and then restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION:

This behavior can occur after you uninstall a previous version of McAfee VirusScan and then install a new version. You cannot remove files that are in use until you restart the computer. If you do not restart the computer after you uninstall the previous version of McAfee VirusScan, certain .dll files that are installed by the newer version are removed when you do eventually restart the computer. I had the same problem after upgrading to IE6. I tried all of the suggestions listed here but nothing worked. I then upgraded to the latest version of MSN Messenger and Outlook Express works fine now. Apparently during the IE6 upgrade MSN Messenger was removed from HLKM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run and was not starting on bootup. If it is not already started OE6 opens very slowly. After installing MSN Messenger 4.6 everything works fine but the MSMSGS.exe is still not in the above registry key but can be disabled thru msconfig.

This is how I fixed Outlook Express 6 slow loading in Windows XP on my computer.
Open Windows Explorer
Open Program Files-Internet Explorer
Select all files in Internet Explorer and DELETE
You will notice in a few seconds that your files return because XP will not let you delete them.
What I found was any files that were corrupted or not supposed to be there were DELETED
Next go to Progam Files-Messanger and delete the complete folder

a tip I saw for this on another site worked beautifully for me. The tip was to RENAME messenger's .EXE file to a different filename (keeping the .exe extension, of course)... that way OE doesn't find it when it starts up and so doesn't load it at all. I did this, and outlook express suddenly loads INSTANTLY, NO DELAY.

(messenger's .exe file can be found in c:\program files\messenger\msmsgs.exe . I renamed it to msmsgs_new.exe, but the particular name doesn't matter)

... no more LONG LONG wait for OE to open!!!
