Running Win98, first edition. Upgraded to IE6.0, which also upgraded Outlook Express to 6.0. At the same time, I added some memory, so I am up to 256MB RAM.

Since the first instance, OE6.0 was two-three times slower than OE5. Takes a long time to open the app; takes a long time to open a received message; takes a long time to open a new message window, etc. etc.

I have compacted folders three times, defragged the hard drive, closed some resident apps, and nothing seems to help improve the speed of OE6.0.

Since EMail is the number one reason I use my computer, I'd like to find a way to speed this app dramatically, or I'd like to replace it with a different mail app. (I do not want to lose my filed mail, or lose my address book.)

Any ideas?

Here's the way to fix Outlook Express 6 slow startup.

Applies to Windows XP, Outlook Express 6, MSN Messenger.

** Note: MSN stores your list on their server so no backing up is required of your contact list.

Step 1
------
Open the file SYSOC.INF file, located in C:\Windows [or your Windows Directory]\inf\ folder.
Open it in Notepad.

To remove Windows Messenger, edit Hide out of the line that reads:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

So that it looks like this:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Save the file, close it and open the Add/Remove Program Applet.
Click on Windows Components button and you'll see Windows Messenger listed.
Unchech it and click Next to remove it.

Step 2
------
Restart the computer, and try Outlook Express. It should be quicker now. If you would like, re-install MSN Messenger and it shouldn't impair OE's startup anymore.

Alternately, if my last message was too long.

** Note: Use at your own risk.

Type this into your run box. Making sure it's one long long with a space between "Section" and "C:\".

rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove,5

I was near to the format stage when a google search came up with the goods! :) The following worked for me ;-)

A neighbor's PC had the same problem, with slow opening of Outlook
Express, and slow switching of mail accounts. Read and tried all the
pstore related stuff, and more. Finally, I saw someone's reference to
the Funlove virus.

Downloaded latest norton antivirus 2002, and sure enough, the machine
was totally infected. Funlove, and also the badtrans.b virus. Cleaned
all of that up, and redid the pstores thing, but didn't help. Went thru
all the microsoft knowledge base recommendations etc.

Other people had mentioned that after an infection, they couldn't get it
right without a reinstall. However, one person suggested just renaming
the two pstore dll's in c:\windows\system

i.e. Pstorec.dll to Pstorec.old.dll and Pstorerc.dll to Pstorerc.old.dll

Strangely enough, this cured the problem. I don't know how the protected
storage stuff works without finding these dlls though. How protected can
it be?

Neighbor hasn't complained about any lost functionality...so who knows.

I would suggest trying it though. (first get latest virus stuff, and
scan though. The badtrans.b was only about 3 weeks old at that time)

In reading thru the posts, I'm thinking more of these "slowdowns" are
due to side-effects of viral infections, than people realize. I was
surprised myself.

I tried the rename msmgs.exe tip and now OUTLOOK loads instantly - thanks very much I was about to reformat my partition with the OS

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I did the rename thing and it worked.

i.e. Pstorec.dll to Pstorec.old.dll and Pstorerc.dll to Pstorerc.old.dll

What a relief.

Thank you for the OEv6 tip on renaming the Pstore dll's. Worked perfect. Thanks :)

Followed Hellman's advice posted 12/22/01 and it solved the slow startup problem. Thanks!

Here is an answer. I have been hasseling with this problem for a few days so here we go. I first studied MS article Q271510 and took the second approach of modifiying the registry. I followed the instructions but it did not work.

I solved the problem. I was infected by the W32/Flcss virus. Are you? Just search your disk for flscc.exe to find out. Anyway, I cleaned the disk using a free download from Sophos. But I still could not get it to work.

It turns out that Pstores.exe was damaged. The virus cleaning may have left the Pstores.exe clean but it left it corrupted. To repair the problem I deleted Pstores.exe and used SFC to recover a new one from my windows 98 CD (just goto run and type in SFC I am sure you will figure it out).

I then followed the instructions from Q271510. I ran regedit and went to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SYSTEM|CurrentControlSet\Services

and Deleted the "ProtectedStorage" key (the whole folder)
I then closed Regedit

Then in a DOS window I typed "Pstores.exe -Install" then rebooted and all waalaa... problem solved

Dear sir

restart the computer. pls tell me what to do

Re

Using XP pro, i have the same problem.
I used a smilar fix as the "ProtectedStorage" fix.
All i did in XP Pro was delete the protected storage key as stated in the 98 fix, and that solved my problem.

For even faster start in XP Pro you run Group Policy Editor
then goto Computer Config - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - then Messenger turn off messenger from even loading starting by any app... ever :)

If you want to uninstall messenger used StonyWall post above is the way to go :)

Slow email in XP Pro? I tried it all...protected storage, msmsgs.exe rename, defragging, etc. Nothing worked. I finally decided to try and undo the peer-to-peer network that I installed at home. I haven't found a way to do that yet, but instead I do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and delete the
busiest svchost.exe session on the Services tab. Voila!
fixed, and better than new. As far as the home network is concerned, I have not found a way to uninstall or unconfigure the host pc (any takers on this one?). I have even tried reinstalling XP, but as another user noted, it just seems to 'remember' certain settings (I can't do a wipe/reformat as my XP Pro license is an upgrade from W2K -too much of a hassle...I need to 'configure' the problem away.). At least my OE6 email is working again. Another email hint - I went with an Ethernet card vs. the USB/cable modem connection that my local ISP provides...small investment, but a huge and noticeable difference in my OE6 performance...G2

Removed viruses some time ago, then noticed that outlook express was taking several minutes to load - and no indication that it was trying. <ctrl-alt-del> would show that msimn was not responding. Tried everything and about to reload windows 98 when found this thread. Tried renaming msmgs.exe but that didn't work, nor did upgrading msn messenger to version 4.6.

The step that did work for me was renaming pstorerc.dll and pstorec.dll (to pstorerc_new.dll and pstorec.dll, although the new name does not matter). OE now loads in a flash, and opening emails works equally fast! The two files are in c:\windows\system.

Thanks for the great advice to Kevin Normoyle. [2thumbsup]

Try Foxmail version 4.1: it is an emulation of outlook express, allows import of outlook express mail and address book, runs four times faster. A bit tricky to install but worth it.
Consider intalling Opera browser 6.0. Then you won't need IE6, you won't need OE6.
The problem with IE6 OE6 and Microsoft products in general is that they are BLOATED AND I MEAN BBBLOATED, REDUNDANT, PRIVACY INVASIVE, AND THEY CONTROL YOU AND YOUR COMPUTER: THIS IS WHY PEOPLE DONT LIKE THEM. THEY ARE UNEFFICIENT and this is why the US government is on Microsoft's tail and no matter how fast and powerfull the last computer you bought is Microsoft products will eventually BLOAT THEM.
The ultimate solution: install Windows 98 LITE (take a full week-end and a computer wizfriend), install opera 6, Foxmail and you have a new computer running 5 times faster.
XP? The ultimate privacy invasive / call home to microsoft on what you are doing product: trash bin candidate unless you run a Cray and you spend hours controlling all DLL's calling home via the internet.

Oh by the way get rid also of WIndows media player and Real player and resident anti-virus programs....Useless bloaters as well.
Resident programs are a no-no.

And these products are FREEEEEEEEEE downloads.
