Running Win98, first edition. Upgraded to IE6.0, which also upgraded Outlook Express to 6.0. At the same time, I added some memory, so I am up to 256MB RAM.

Since the first instance, OE6.0 was two-three times slower than OE5. Takes a long time to open the app; takes a long time to open a received message; takes a long time to open a new message window, etc. etc.

I have compacted folders three times, defragged the hard drive, closed some resident apps, and nothing seems to help improve the speed of OE6.0.

Since EMail is the number one reason I use my computer, I'd like to find a way to speed this app dramatically, or I'd like to replace it with a different mail app. (I do not want to lose my filed mail, or lose my address book.)

Any ideas?

After many hours of following suggestions from the Microsoft support center without success, I followed your suggestion to change the name of msmsgs.exe, and OE6 loaded in a flash. I only wish I had seen this first - it took me 10 minutes to resolve through this website. Thank you.

I renamed msmsgs.exe and now OE6 opens super fast. thanx i was at the end of my rope

I have a problem with the received date displayed in OLEXP6, and cannot seem to resolve it.
I use a program called enetbot to retrieve my AOL mail into OLEXP6, and in so doing, I am finding that a random number of incoming mails are dated 07/02/2106 at 07h25.
This causes a certain amount of difficulty as can be imagined.
I suspect that this happened after I received a dodgy email from someone ( Norton AV2002 did not pick it up ). The email in question carried the same date, and contained the message " enjoy ", although there was no .exe or any other attachment.
I've run full system scans, the only virus I've ever had on the system was W32/badtrans mm enc, which norton picked up and quarantined, I've since deleted it. Don't think this is connected as that happened before the date problem.
Can anyone suggest a way of resetting the date in OLEXP6 or otherwise resolving this problem ? Would be most grateful as it is driving me BATTY !
Thanks !

This is how I fixed Outlook Express 6 slow loading in Windows XP on my computer.
Open Windows Explorer
Open Program Files-Internet Explorer
Select all files in Internet Explorer and DELETE
You will notice in a few seconds that your files return because XP will not let you delete them.
What I found was any files that were corrupted or not supposed to be there were DELETED
Next go to Progam Files-Messanger and delete the complete folder

I was having the same problem as the guys above but I'm using windows 2000 and OE6. And renaming Ms. Messenger didn't work.

I didn't want to delete any key from the registry because you never know what programs depend on it.

Some time ago I was disabling (and stopping) many services that I thought weren't needed, for eg: Protected storage.

After reading the posts. I went to services and started that service back again.

Now everything works perfect.

hey phaedrus99

- nice tip my friend.

Thanks a lot. :)
You just made my life a whole lot better.

Using Win98 SE, Outlook Express 6. The other day, out of the blue, OE6 buggered off on me. Took forever to open, forever to reply to messages, forever to send messages, and i also noticed a long pause after hitting "search" in any search engine in IE6. Tried for two days to fix the problem, finally installed Norton AV2002, had 490 files infected with W32.Wierd. Cleaned them all out, re-installed IE6 (including OE6) but nothing worked to get my Outlook back up to speed - in fact, it seemed even slower. I read this post, tried the "Pstorec.dll to Pstorec.old.dll and Pstorerc.dll to Pstorerc.old.dll" trick, and it worked like a charm, my Outlook Express is now back to lightning speed. FDISK was only hours away cause it was pissing me off so bad.... THANKS IMMENSELY!!!

This issue has driven me mad since I've tried everything from Microsoft Knowledge Base solve to delete IE, reinstall IE, reinstall OE6 ( by the way, I'm using OE6, IE6 )....I also have installed McAfee Antivirus and uninstall it. I also got infected by W32 virus. Solving the issues in these 2 direction had no results. Accidentally, I've tried the renaming msmsgs.exe and it works AT ONCE. Lucky me !!! I've never thought of this such easy solution !!!

Thanks to phaedrus99

Open up Register Editor by running "regedit" command. Click on "Edit" and select "Find". Copy and paste FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541 onto the "Find what" box and click on "Find Next". Once found, click on the plus sign in front of it and you will find InProc32 and LocalServer32. Select one of them then right click on default under the name column and select "modify", then simply delete what's in the Value Data box. Repeat for the other.

Thats works great..Thanks for posting that

After trying countless attemps to fix this ANNOYING problem, I finally gave in to using regedit (last resort) and followed the fix #2 given on Jan 28, 2002 by KrunChiez..so look back to that date and handle!! Again, fix#2 worked and thank god for that!!!

Hope it helps you too!

OK, guys, here's the information on how to fix Windows if you are having
trouble with on-line forms and Outlook Express (OE). This problem will
likely occur if you have been infected with the Funlove virus. Symptoms are
a slowness in filling out online forms, and slowness in OE launching and
retreiving email.

1. Go to the Windows/System folder. Find the file PSTORES.EXE. Rename it to
something else, such as PSTORES.OLD. Windows will probably double-check to
make sure you want to do this; say yes.

2. Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. Click
on the Tools tab. Select System File Checker, then select the Extract One
File Option. Type in PSTORES.EXE and click OK. If you don't have the Win98
CAB files on hard drive, you will have to put in your Windows 98 CD disk.
You can install the file directly to the Windows/System folder. If you
install the file somewhere else, make sure it gets to the Windows/System
Folder.

3. Close all open programs. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and click Open or OK
(Insert standard warnings here about modifying/deleting/backing up the
registry). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services. Find
the key labeled ProtectedStorage. DELETE this entire key.

4. Go to Start/Programs/MSDOS Prompt. At the prompt, type
"C:\windows\system\pstores.exe(sp)-install" note the (sp) means a space. Hit
Enter. Nothing will display, it will simply return to a command prompt.

5. Close all programs and re-start the computer.

For more information, go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and look up article
Q251787.

When I access a downloaded message in IE6, the first one takes a full minute to open. After this the remaining ones open quite quickly. This is only on this opening of IE 6. If I close this and re-open it, the time to open a message is again a full minute. Why is this so?

There are many solutions offered in this forum, but the best is coincidentally the easiest to implement. Phaedrus99's solution works instantaneously. Just rename the Messenger exe file (MSMSGS.exe)to anything else and Outlook Express will loads instantly the next time you get into it. You don't even need to reboot! Thanks phaedrus99.

This thread posting rocks!!!
I am using windows 98 and outlook express 5.5. I was
having the terribly slow problem with starting outlook
and with completing forms in explorer. I checked out
all the pstore stuff, including Microsoft (TM) Knowledge
Base Articles 235300, 251787, and 271510 but nothing
worked. I edited the registry, deleted and replaced
the imghelp.dll files, deleted and replaced all pstore
(etc.) files, reinstalled explorer (several times), and even
renamed the messenger executable. Nothing worked!

But I renamed the two .dll files mentioned above
(pstorec.dll and pstorerc.old.dll to pstorec.dll and
pstorerc.old.dll). It worked like a charm and fixed
explorer too. Thanks.

Wonder what the problem is... If it happens in win98
and in XP must be some design flaw in the evil empire.
Anyone know how to remove Microsoft's industrial
operation system?

I renamed Messenger because I didn't want it and couldn't find out how to get rid of it in XP Pro (which I have only recently upgraded to), and it must have been about then that I found Outlook Express 6 was slow to come up after the splash screen, only I didn't connect the two. Looking on here today reminded me of Messenger being renamed, so I restored its proper title and hey - Outlook Express is loading properly. :)

I was able to improve the performance of OE6 by following your reccomendations, however I am still having a big problem. When using OE6 for newsgroups, it either takes forever to switch newsgroups or stops responding altogether. I have to ctrl-alt-del, end task, and restart OE to get into the next newsgroup.

ANY SUGGESTIONS????????????????
