Are these stable now and safe to use in a remote situation (I have a server access to use in the remote location)?

I've been using them almost exclusively for at least 6 months.

Only 1 failed and it just aborted without impact to the system.

The most recent attempt was unmonitored.

Upgrade took place after hours and system was fully working the next day.

I've recently performed online upgrades (scheduled and non-scheduled) on a range of 3300's.

I also used the Remote Proxy blade of a 'local' MBG to store the SW files instead of pulling from the data center. Works like a charm.

'scheduled and non-scheduled' read: oh crap, I need to upgrade this node which no one told me about

What release are you on, and what are you upgrading to? I had issues with releases previous to 9.0, but since then it's worked well.

Yes, Agree with Lundah, I do not attempt this on any system prior to 4.1

I did 350 from 9.0.3.34 to 10.0.4.26/MCD 4.0 SP 4 with 5 that failed. 3 of those were due to the site losing power between the start of the upgrade and the activation time, and 2 failed "safe" in that they didn't activate the new release and stayed running at 9.0; a 2nd attempt on those worked.

@ Lundah - What about your control group?

You have enough data there for a scientific study

I guess my control group was the 100 or so that I did from & to the same releases offline, which of course all worked on the first attempt.

bribob,

I have managed to upload the new release of software on the MBG and I have checked that it's there under the correct file version structure.

what is it next? do I have to tell the MCD about ftp IP and credentials and then just set a new scheduled task on the MCD?

Can you point me to the correct documents so I can have a look before screwing this up. I will test on our lab first.

cheers,

daniel

Dan,

You will still use the SI tool to initiate the upgrade, except you will point the MCD towards the MBG (FTP server) instead of an FTP server located off site. Keep in mind that the online upgrade will format your inactive partition and restore the backup file which is generated when you start the SI process. Any changes made after the restore which are made to the active partition will not carry over.

How critical is it that the site remain up for the entire process? I find that the biggest delay in upgrading is actually getting the files to the controller. If you've got them onsite on the MBG, an offline upgrade should go relatively quickly.

Supplementary question: Am I correct in assuming that you can only use a separate FTP server for an online upgrade? No using the 3300 one?

wireman50 - your question is a good one as it would explain a lot about a recent adventure of mine.

I think your assumption is on the right track, I too would like an answer to this question

I only ever used the external FTP server, didn't try it the other way.

Never tried any other way other than FileZilla or through IIS-FTP.
