I have an older AMD K6 computer with windows 98 and an FX5200 graphics card. I want to be able to boot up the computer with no video cable connected and then after the computer has started windows, connect the monitor via VGA cable. My problem is that when I connect the VGA cable after startup, I get no video. Is there a setting that checks for a monitor connected or can I trick the computer to think there is a monitor connected?

NVidia cards have a well known dislike of not having a monitor plugged in from startup. I think your only option may be to change to a video card with a different chipset...

jloeff,
Don't know exactly why you want to do this but maybe try using a KVM switch?

I want to connect my arcade monitor to the computer and start up without switching over from my standard computer monitor. Even when I have the arcade monitor connected, I can not get video on the standard monitor after switching over without restarting the computer.

The fact that you can't switch over from the "arcade monitor" to the "standard monitor" after the machine has booted, could indicate one of two problems. Either the video is set at too high a resolution for the "standard monitor" to resolve, or there's a fault with the video card.

Do you get the same problem if you start up with the "standard monitor" connected and then try to change over to the "arcade monitor" after bootup?

Do the same problems exist at the DOS level?

Scenarios:
The aracde monitor works fine if I start up with the standard monitor connected and then switch over after windows boots up.

I get video on the arcade monitor before windows starts when connected before computer boot.

I get no video when trying to connect standard monitor after starting windows with arcade monitor connected.

If I restart the computer after attempting to start with arcade monitor, windows finds new hardware (plug and play monitor) and installs a driver for the standard monitor.
