Networking troubles

Have a desktop with 98se and a laptop with XP pro. Both computers have the same workgroup name and both have different computer names. I am using a Nic with crossover cable. I can see both computers on both computers and can access the desktop from the laptop, but when I try to access the laptop from the desktop in network neighbor’s icon (laptop) I get a prompt saying:

You must supply a password to make this connection.

Resource: \\LAPTOP\IPC$
Password: _____________________________



Save this password in your password list.

How can I change this so as I don’t have to supply a password, or were do I find this password? I have entered every thinkable password but says wrong password.

All usernames and passwords on Computer A made members with passwords on Computer B. And vice-versa.

No blank or empty passwords to be used.

Anyway I heard the $ means security and can be turned off? I also forgot to tell everyone I have ZoneAlarm pro on the laptop and Norton Internet Security on the desktop.

The particular share being shown, IPC$ is a management share for the local System Account.

It appears as a nonsensible response to an attempt to directly map to a computer without:

. specifying a valid sharename;
. and, not having sufficient permissions on the remote computer.

If computer A has users Tom, and Harry, then Tom and Harry should be added as users on Computer B with their passwords. Similarly, Computer B, with users Sally and Mary, would require that Computer A add Sally and Mary and their passwords as users. The end result is that both Computer A and Computer B have Tom, Harry, Sally, and Mary as defined users with passwords.

Have you made any shares on these computers yet? A drive, folder and/or printer?

Yes, both computers have shared files. I have both machines networking before and had to reinstall the OS on the desktop (98se). Seem before I was told how to turn this feature off. Because I never had to do that that I know of, unless it did it automaticly.

What I need to know (exactly) how to set this up so I can share files from the laptop to the desktop? I can share one way and although that is OK. Of course I would like to have both machines share each way. How and where do I find the password that it is looking for? I am not very computer literate so be gentle.

No offense but are you even literate? lol just kidding....bcastner explained it in plenty of detail. Create the same users with the same passwords on both machines. Then problem resolved.

One thing to check on the XP machine is the possibility of a password/username combination from your prior installation of Win98.

On the XP machine:
Start, Run, control userpasswords2
Click the Advanced tab, then "Manage Passwords"
If you find any older passwords relating to your previous Win98 machine, remove them.
