Hello,

We just recieved a 4000R PIII 650 and would like to upgrade to dual CPU. Does this server require a vrm with the second CPU or can we just install a second CPU?

Also does anyone know where we can get a cable for the keyboard, mouse, video that does not have to go thur a KVM box. We are using this as a stand alone server and have no need for a KVM box.

Any good site for info on this server?

Thanks

Just wnated to everyone an update. I talked with an IBM service rep and he gave me the FRU for the cable, it is 09N7179, part # 21P8574. The cable was about $15 and shipping another $12. I found the same cable on eBay some guy was selling for $65. So go to IBM parts.

Also, this server does not reuire a VRM with a CPU upgrade.

Hi,

I have also recently purchased 4000R server.
How to connect my keyboard, mouse(PS/2) and monitor to this server. I understand there is only one port to connect all three peripherals. Please advice how to connect all three of them with one port. Is this cable u mentioned Part# 21P8574 will connect all three I/O devices i.e. PS/2 adapters to IBM port. I am kind of confuse and will highly appreciated for your feedback...

Thanks
LKA

Hi,

Yes, you need to have the IBM special adapter cable I talked about. I just received mine the other day and it is really just a break out cable. IBM uses a special port for Keyboard, Video & mouse, this cable breaks it out to the standard connections. Normally this computer is rack mounted and all of the computers in the rack are connected via this special port to each other and then to a KVM box. This allows you to have only 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse for up to 42 computers in each rack. I have yet to receive my 4000R yet, UPS says it will be delivered on Monday (2/11) so I can try out the cable, but it looks right.

Which 4000R configuration is yours?

Thanks for the information. Do I need to call IBM(Is yes then what is the right number to call) to get this cable or I can get it from any other place(CompUSA and so on). I checked in Circuit City and bestbuy doesn't have it. On ebay, one of the guy is selling at whooping $70 for this cable. What should I ask for "which cable" if I go to places like "electronics shop" and so on. Please advice...

My 4000R is:
M/C Type: 8652
Model: 55y

It is a refurbished server and so far so looks cool...

I will try and remember to get and post the IBM parts center phone number on Monday.

Hi,

I went on IBM site and called their main number to get their part department number. According to them part number 09N7179 has been discontinued and so do replacement part# FRU 10FEB00

IBM do not have the FRUJ either. I am freaking out now and have to searh for third party to get this cable...

Please help if you can by giving any third party reference or maybe the right IBM part number. I called 1-800-3887080

Please! Please suggest something in order for me to proceed with this elephant I have purchased...

OK this is the number I called 1-800-388-7080 and the part number is 21P8574.

Thanks MRRL! I will call IBM and order this part number!!!
I really appreciate it!

Just wondering! Have you tested this cable with Netfinity 4000R? Is it working out for you...

I have only one computer to connect. Do I need to buy KVM switch to attach this cable with kbd, mouse and monitor? If yes then what kind of KVM switch(any specifications) is compatible with Netfinity 4000R

Thanks,
LKA1

The cable worked out just great. I just hooked up the monitor, keyboard and mouse right to the cable. But the 4000R they sent me is broken and won't boot up all the way and has a bad hard drive. But the cable worked just fine.

I got the reference from I.B.M. and got the cable from a Boulder, CO company. Unfortunately, the ps/2 keyboard and mouse won't work so there is no way to boot the system (after POST). In addition there is some kind of LOUD alarm from the MB that makes it tough to troubleshoot. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

I bought the Netfinity 4000R from Ubid.com and freeked when I saw that there were no manuals and no cables..

Thanks to this site I found out that this part is available from IBM however you'll say that the server does not start right so I am seriously thinking of sending this server back without even getting the part.. what should I do.

Thanks

Hi,

I have also purchased the same server from ubid and I am having hard time of my life. After a long struggle for getting console adapter cable with MRRL help(Thanks a ton), I was able to start system but Hard disk is crashing after every 4 ot 5 days. fsck/e2fsck does not fix the problem. The only option left is to reinstall RED HAT LINUX and I have done 4 times but same result... Absolutely hard disk is piece of junk or disk drive controller is bad. I will even call ubid to return my system if possible. Not at all recommended system to buy from UBID...

)-:

If anyone knows how to fix this issue then that will be great.

I9990301 DISK failure or disk reset failed
*** An error occurred during the file system check. aborting

FYI: I am running RED HAT LINUX 7.2 on netfinity 4000R server...

Hey just wnated to let you all know that I did return the 4000R I got and got my money back from uBid. Thats the last time I do that. It's not worth it save a few buck.

Hi again,

I got the Netfinity cables however when I boot up the system it does not show me anything on the display and the keyboard also .. does not light up when Num lock etc are pressed Please could anyone advice me && thanks for the Tip about ubid.com I'll give it a last try.

Rgds.
Sam
I guess It would be easier if I bought the parts and assembled my computer.

Hello Everybody,

I just bought my Netfinity 4000R off eBay and went through the same thing with the cable.

My newest problem is that it keeps crashing when I try to install NT 4.0! I can get past the adapter configuration and when I click for windows to finish setup... BOOM! Stack dump!

Has anybody else had this problem? If so, can you share your remedy?

Thanks,

Chad.

I bought a total of (6) 4000R from ubid. Besides the problem with the KVM cable (which IBM sent for free for the machines they refurbished, the other's we had to buy from IBM) we had only one problem with a power supply (just returned the machine to UBID). All other machines are running WIN2K server w/o any problem ! Sorry, no experience with WinNT.

I bought a 4000r off UBID a while ago and have found that when installing WIN2K advanced server, the mouse does not work the majority of the time. In only a few instances has the mouse worked. I am running the IBM supplied kvm cable to a Belkin kvm switch. Anyone run into problems like this?

I too have an IBM 4000R, with its bizarre CMBus Cluster Management Bus, and have had a hard time tracking the correct cable down. This forum is the only place that seems to have good information on the subject.

Anyway, I've just asked a friend in America to purchase the cable and ship it over to me, (I'm in the UK), Part 21P8574 from IBM, 1-800-3887080.

If it works or not, I'll post here again.

Thanks for all the info!
