NetFinity 4000R CPU Upgrade and cables 1

Hello,

We just recieved a 4000R PIII 650 and would like to upgrade to dual CPU. Does this server require a vrm with the second CPU or can we just install a second CPU?

Also does anyone know where we can get a cable for the keyboard, mouse, video that does not have to go thur a KVM box. We are using this as a stand alone server and have no need for a KVM box.

Any good site for info on this server?

IBM price is now $100, still steep for a cable that was $17 just months ago (maybe they watch this list to track demand). If anyone has a more economic resolution, I'd appreciate a post here.

never mind. I found it on ebay for $23. Cable was tagged as "IBM Netfinity 4000R CMBus KVM cable. This is IBM FRU # 10FEB00 IBM PART # 09N7179" -- I hope it works

Hey guys, stumbled upon this some time ago. I've got two Blazer 1.0's by way of Ebay that have been sitting around for a couple months because I couldn't track down the KVM cables/console adapter. Fingers crossed, my ebay order should arrive soon, and Ill be in business. In those two months though, I've done some digging around on them (including referencing many links from this forum, so thank you everyone!). Just wanted to put out my latest on what i've found.

- The IBM Netfinity 4000R and Network Engines Blazer 1.0 (P7000) are, in fact, the same machine. About the only difference I can see between the two are the manufacturer names & the remote management software that Network Engines shipped and did NOT license to IBM. Otherwise, IBM took the OEM'd Blazers, slapped their names on it, and off they went.

that specializes in support for the Blazers. You can get the manual at

. They *do* carry the KVM cables, but they quoted me $100 for one, and also pushed that they were "the only supplier on the internet with these." Not true. DO NOTE, however, that in the manual is the pinout table for all the ports! DIY'ers, best of luck...
- IBM has either completely discontinued the (price-jacked) KVM cables and boxes, or has changed the part numbers to nothing anyone can find. Even the IBM reps on the phone were clueless, and could only reccomend their outsourced parts company, who also doesn't carry any of the parts. Googling for any incarnation of "Netfinity", "4000R", "Network Engines", "Blazer", "KVM", and "Console Cable" combined turns up a good number of stores who at one point had the cables for sale (I talked to a number of them on the phone), but have long since let them go, and wished us the best of luck in the search.
- There were a few models of the KVM cable available. You could either get a breakout box that took the cable with 2 37pin jacks and turned it into the VGA and two PS/2 ports in a piece of hardware, or get a single cable that had one jack for the server, and three ends (2 PS/2, 1 VGA). It's the latter I found on IBM's web site some time ago, and the *former* i've just bought off ebay (auction 3081269284 if anyone reads this soon, otherwise just email me and I'll shoot you some pictures).

So that's about that, and pretty much everything I've found so far. There's a few more details here and there I've come across, a couple other manuals and guides, but nothing really noteworthy. I'm still looking for parts and gear (like where to find a heatsink that will fit in the case...), so if anyone else has any reccomendations, do feel free to let me know. And likewise, if anyone has any more questions or wants some more information, feel free to either reply to this, or get in touch with me directly.
