Everytime I startup my machine I get two errors. This has to do with the MSINFO.EXE. I think it got deleted when a virus infected it and have gotten the start up error ever since. What can I do to fix this? It isn't showing any signs up problems elsewhere on my system. These are the two error messages I get at Windows 98 startup:

Cannot find the file 'msinfo.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

Could not load or run 'msinfo.exe' specified in the WIN.INI. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the WIN.INI file.

My question is, is MSINFO.EXE a legit Microsoft file? Its not located on my computer, so what should I do? Thanks..

Hi, NomadicOne,

Try searching for MSINFO32.EXE (or just MSINFO) in Start -> Find.

msinfo.exe is not a valid Windows file.
msinfo32.exe is.
Did you check for a virus?
Before doing that, make sure your antivirus program has the latest update files installed.

From a Google search:

"It's caused by a CWS Trojan wich hijackes your computer by surfing certain sites, such as pornografic and others.. firstly it shows you the msinfo.exe error, and slows down your internet-connection-speed massively while hijacking your starting-site to a very advertising search-site.

AND HERE'S THE SOLUTION:
just go to and download the CWSHREDDER zip-file to fix this trojan. it works within 25sec. and makes your machine clean again! CWS trojan cannot be found by other spy-ware-defenders such as ad-aware or spy sweeper."
