Hey guys!

I got a migration comming up here shortly that involves returing our currently leased servers for new ones. So, I'm looking into how I can move my current publisher and subscriber, BOTH, no new machines and still retain all my user /environment information.

I'm almost certain it's just a matter of copying the db's over, but i can't find anything on Cisco's web site about migrating. Does any know where I can find a white sheet on this, or if you've done this before, how'd ya pull it!??

Also, I have a Unity server that also needs to be moved to a new machine. Thanks for any help guys!!!

FYI: don't know if this is a huge deal, but when we move our stuff over, our new server will be CCM 4.0 instead of our current 3.3(3) --- thanks again!

Ok, got 2000.2.6sr3 installed now on my publisher.. Up and running again.

Running the upgAssistant gives me a couple errors, so i'm not quite ready for the ccm upgrade yet.

here's my errors. From the DC Directory Health check:

"02-17-2005 15:26:03.370:DCDHealthC: ERR:Could not Create the IDisPatch Object. Error code is 1008"

And from the Call Manager Replication Status:

"02/17/2005 15:26:08.589 HELPER| CReplication::DisplayGrid *ERROR* replication failed [Publisher= 172.16.1.1 ]At least one job failed to execute"

Can't find any info on the first one, and the second one is talking about a password miss match. Not possible, i know every password and they're all identicle.

anyway, opened a TAC case for some extra help on those errors..

Hmmm. Have you checked SQL Enterprise Manager to see if there is any problem with replication? If you open up Enterprise Manager and expand your publisher CCM, is there a red X or anything over Replication Monitor?...

If so, you may need to recreate the subscription, which is no big deal.

The SQL sa password may have gotten mismatched between the pub and the sub...that's also not a huge deal to fix either...check the Enterprise Manager first, though.

TMH

Ok, the replication one fixed.. no big deal there, just had to refresh that subscription a bit.

the DC Directory Health is still failing though.

Hmmmmmmmmmm...okay...you could try resetting the service account passwords on the CCM's. It's pretty painless, done it several times.

Go to your publisher CCM and go to C:\Program Files\Cisco\bin, and double click the file AdminUtility.exe (you can only find this on the publisher CCM). Enter in the local admin password when prompted. You'll see a window with a tree structure of all your CCM's. Click the box at the very top, next to the name of your publisher CCM; it will autoselect all of the service accounts.

Now, at this point, you can either choose to create a new password, or verify the synchronization. First I would verify the synch; click the Options Menu, select the Check synch option, and enter in your password phrase (2x) when prompted.

If some of them are not synched, or you just have doubts, then you can set a new password. Click the Options menu, and select Set New Password. You'll be prompted to enter in a new password phrase (or you can enter in the same phrase you've been using, that's what I usually do). This utility creates the passwords for each account based on your private password phrase.

Give that a try, and see if it fixes your error...

Ok, got the dc directory fixed now too. Uninstalled the old BARS app and the upg assistant. rebooted and reinstalled. upg assistant showing nothing but green!

Tina, if I upgrade my Pub tomorrow to 3.3(4), will phones recognize the new software and right away try downloading the new Phone Load? Don't the phones have to be restarted to see that? I wanna upgrade this tomorrow, but I still need it to be seemless to the phones until I say.

Here's my plan. Just updgrade to 33(4) and then up to 4.1.2 tomorrow, without touching the sub, and make my backups of the pub and migrate. what'ch ya think?

i got a bachelour party tomorrow night (not mine) so I can't be here late. maybe i should wait till next week huh?!

Excellent! Glad it wasn't that hard to fix. You know, I think there was an issue with the 3.3.4 upgrade assistant and that DC Directory error...sheesh, yes there was, how could I have forgotten! That DC Directory error is a glitch, uninstalling and reinstall the upgrade assistant will fix that. Has it been that long ago since I upgraded to 3.3.4?!

How do you have your cluster config'd? One pub, one sub? If all phones and other devices are registered to the sub, unless - for whatever reason - failover is initiated, then your phones will stay on the current phone load. Basically, if you give them a chance to reset, they'll contact the TFTP server again for their new load.

TMH

Hehe I just re-read the last part of your post; you may want to wait until next week, the upgrade to 4.1.2 takes a loooong time on the publisher. You plan on migrating all of this tomorrow?...

TMH

well, i got all day today to do the upgrade, so i figured i could get it done in 5 or 6 hours..

So as long as my phones don't restart, then they won't contact the tftp server for the new load right?

I think i'm set.

Correct, as long as they don't reset for any reason (failover being one of them). Also, if you don't want them to get a new load at all, you can check and see which load you're running, and after the upgrades, you can put that load in under the device defaults. That way, the phones may reset, but they won't get a new load...

Let me know how it goes...

TMH

So, there's really nothing bad about running differernt versions off CCM on the pub and sub? seems like there should be problems there, am i missing something?

Nope, you're not missing anything, especially if you're going to go to new servers. Not saying that's the ideal way to run the system, but ran the last upgrade like that for two days because of all the issues I had.

How long are you planning on running them like that...? You doing the migration right away?

TMH

Well, it'll only be that way till i can get a good BARS from my current pub once it's at 4.1.2. once that's done, i'll merge it on the new server, do my tests, then we're live. probably 5 days tops (3 business days total)

I've already started the 3.3.4 upgrade......

uh oh.. now that i've upgraded the pub to 3.3.4, my sub can't write to it!

I try setting up a forward or something on my phones and I get "Error Database" not good.

All services are running on both pub and sub, and there isn't any red X's on anything in the sql manager. But, there is a red dot on the name of my pub on my sub's sql manager under replication... event logs arn't telling me antyhing either!

help? :)

A repost, just to save my typing fingers...

"When you have two different versions of CCM running in your cluster (which will happen during an upgrade) they won't communicate with each other...but, while you have them at two different versions, as long as all the phones are registered to your subscribers, the phones will be able to function normally...I think they only thing they won't be able to do is forward/unforward their phones, since the forwarding table resides on the publisher."

Yep, you won't be able to set forwards until you migrate over and get your new pub server set up. The red dot you see is normal when the pub runs at a different CCM version.

If the forwarding thing is a real hassle for you, can always upgrade your sub to 3.3.4 (or did you go all the way to 4.1.2?) so they can talk to one another again (you only have one sub, right?)...that way the phones will be able to forward. That's another hour or so upgrading...

TMH

Sorry...I must of forgot that post sometime after our 70th or 80th post.. :) Thanks T!

Hehe no problem, there's so many little details that it's hard to keep track. I keep a notebook next to me at all times; if I don't write these little upgrade tidbits down, I will forget them...again, let me know how it goes...

TMH

So, no matter what i do on my publisher now, it won't replicate any changes to the sub. so i might as well finish my upgrade!

Yep, it won't replicate any changes at all. Might as well...

TMH

Ok...follow up! First of all, Tina, you rock. You helped me more than you know....I feel like i owe you just more than something, maybe someday i'll make it up to ya..

Second of all, TAC sucks. They always have sucked and they'll continue to suck. As long as they can keep taking illiterate people and turning them into Cisco engineers over the weekend they'll suck...plain and simple. If i wouldn't of listended to TAC in this migration I honestly would of saved myself probably 40 hours of work. I won't explain why, but it's the truth.

So, all said and done, 4.1.2 is working like a champ. My new Unity server is also kickin arse. I have no clue what 4.1.2 can all do yet, but i'll figure it out over time... Not a bad migratiton, everythings common since for the most part as long as you only consider TAC as an option or a means of advice..

anyway, screw TAC, and cheers to Tina!!

I am extremely glad your migration went well, congratulations! A huge migration too - CCM plus Unity, no easy feat. Thanks for your kind words also...I've been through hell and back with TAC, and I've done more upgrades than some of the techs I've talked to - glad I could help someone else out.

I do have a question, though - if your Unity ports start to lock up, let me know...I'm having a port-locking issue that I can't seem to fix, and I don't know if it's just CCM 4.1.2 or something else...
