How can I clearly and succinctly describe the sort of person who behaves in a certain way, just because:
a. They can. "Everyone can do whatever they like in a free country"
b. It's not illegal/immoral. "Do you have a problem with me doing this?"
c. They like to be different.
d. They wish to provoke a reaction.
e...tcetera, etcetera.

Some examples:

Offspring that affect to enjoy a particularly raucous brand of music, simply because I don't like it.

Ramblers and Walkers who decide to walk across a field where sheep are grazing, simply to exercise their right to use the recently-discovered Public Footpath, unearthed in a dusty map from the bowels of the Library. When the landowner protests that he would have liked some warning so that he could have moved the sheep, the incensed Ramblers wail about their loss of "Freedom To Roam"

Persons who follow an unusual diet regime involving boiling up foul-smelling ingredients for several hours at a time, making the building virtually uninhabitable for others, simply because it's a free country and one can eat whatever the heck one likes.

Cyclists.

I'm sure you can think of several more examples, but what is the collective noun, if you like, for such people?

Bloody-minded Morons? Teenagers?

Orinary.

Is that the root of 'Ornery' as in "dang those ornery varmints!" P-TINGggg!

I have one word that keeps popping into my head as I read your post, but posting such a word would get me removed from this forum. [censored]

It's not really contentious or argumentative or troublesome; the folks I'm thinking of just go about their business in a way that's different from the rest of us.

When you see the things they do, you think to yourself "Why on earth would anyone want to do that?" If you say this out loud, the "Object Of This Post" will respond "Why not? Have you got a problem with that? It's not against the law you know, I've got a right to <whatever>, just the same as you"

No aggression, no quarrelsomeness, no superciliousness; sometimes even the nicest, calmest people can exhibit this quality of....WHAT?

They're independent.

As a group, such people are sometimes (though by no means always) of the type known as "Treehuggers" or "Whale Kissers"

Their concern for the environment leads to the adoption of a way of life that may have been normal during the Middle Ages, but is socially inappropriate in the 21st Century.

Others are just...Faddy? Weird? What?

CC, so am I, but I try and think about the feelings and views of others.

I know that aerosol deodorant mutates butterflies, but the noxious result of a day's work if I refrained from using it is far more destructive to lifeforms.

I like a curry as much as the next man, but I restrict my recipes to stuff that humans find appetising, rather than emetic.

I drive a car, because NOBODY needs to see my buttocks encased in violet Lycra.

A few years ago, my son declared his allegiance to, and love of the the music of, Slipknot.

I listened to the album he had in his CD player, and liked it so much I bought it myself, and asked for "IOWA" for Christmas when it came out.

He has never listened to them again, explaining that he only listened to them to get a rise out of me.

rjoubert seems to be on the right track with unconventional; different from the rest, yet still (just) within the bounds of acceptability. Have a STAR!

I'm reminded of the words of the Mother Superior:
Sound Of Music said:
Nuns: She's a darling! She's an angel!
Mum Super: She's a girl!!!

Meaning that everyone behaves the way they do because that's who they are, and that's how they behave!

So maybe the word I'm looking for is:

HUMAN

Good effort CC: have a STAR for trying, but ion some cases, it's that these people are conformist to such a degree that it causes a problem or inconvenience to others, e.g. the Ramblers, or folks who stay for 5 hours in a certain chain Pizza restaurant, because the are entitled to as much 'Bottomless Coffee' as they can drink.

One time, my niece just stood still in her bedroom and refused to move an inch.

When we asked her why, she said "While we were down town yesterday, Daddy told me to walk on the pavement, and nowhere else"

I said "So?"

She said "So I'm not allowed to walk in the house, because there's no pavement."

I swear it's true! She is a prime example of the literal, unconventional, uber-conformist, obdurate, perverse, um, er, whatever that I'm on about!

I like rjoubert's eccentric. That simply means they are "off-center." ;-)
