mics 0x32 w/fiber extender 4

0x32 is located in building A, w/2 cid, and a 6 port fiber card. port three connected via mck fiber extender to building B with fiber station module. port four connected with mck fiber extender to building C with fiber station module. different ports and different cards has been tried and the port that is attached to building C keeps going out during lightening storms. Always the port connected to building C. only thing connecting these buildings are non shielded fiber. grounding has been checked in both locations. Any hints to fix this solution.
 
Call Citel and ask what they recommend, because I think it's the MCK Extenders that loose communications with each other. If you power them down and back up does the station mod come back to life?
 
Yes ups at both ends. Also the extenders are DTI models not MSK. Extenders are not going down just one way voice traffic on the port.
 
Hawks question- Does a power cycle on the extenders bring them back up? You may have to reset the station mod, too.

Make sure ALL hardware is plugged into the UPS, and the ups doesn't have a bad cell.
 
The extenders have not been the problem, only the port on the fiber card that is going out. All the eqpt is on the ups.
 
Its been asked twice above....does powering down the MCK's bring it back to life??, yes or no? or what does bring it back to life?.

You also say you have tried different ports and different cards.....how about replacing the station module?.

Try hooking up a laptop to the UPS's to see if anything abnormal happend with the power.





 
I have not tried powering down the MCK's. when we swap the fiber card or change ports it works. only have powered down the 0x32. the next time we have this trouble we will try powering the MCK's down and see what happens. Station module has not been swapped either. We had lightening this weekend. Monday we may have a trouble again.
 
The reason we're emphasizing power cycling the extenders- it's the least invasive way to bring them back up. It won't take down anyone else whose phone is working. As a rule, the fix that affects the fewest people is best.

The MCK extenders, and station module are fairly sensitive to power fluctuations. All battery backups are not created equal. Your best bet is to make sure you're using one that is designed for continuous feed off the battery. That eliminates the 900ms response time of most cheaper models. It won't guarantee you'll never have power trouble, but it helps a lot.
 
I am having a very similar problem that brougth me to Tek-Tips.I thought my problem was weather related also but finally seemed to prove that wrong.Anyway I have normal telephone operations Lights ,display ect but the voice is wahwahwah...Power cycling the station mod clears the problem..it is on a UPS also..I am using MCK extenders and the remote has been changed...I changed out 4 pairs of fiber try to affect problem...no change..I get an EVT247 in the error log along with a ALM 50-04 which is the station mod in question about the time of trouble but not the same time...a couple days in advance not sure if this is a clue or not
 
Maybe you have a bad port on the expansion card.....doesn't happen often but it does happen. I would switch ports on the expansion card and see what happens.
 
Side note: there is a fairly new forum1242 that was private before but is now open. you might get some new info there also.

I found the problem thanks to RikRogers response.I went to the site and unplugged the UPS and plugged it right back in and duplicated the problem !!! We are using a MinuteMan PRO-1100 with what their specs say is a 600mil response..Thanks for everyones inputs
 
So far have not had trouble again. Im sure it will be back soon and we will try the ups, and see what the extenders do when they have a power failure. Thanks for everyone's help.
 
Trouble is back. We replaced both UPS, with 600 minuteman. We had a power surge friday and the extensions went out. unplugged and replugged the extender on the remote end and phones came back up.
 
Log into the MCK units and check the network log. I do know from experience that older s/w levels in the MCK's were causing service affecting problems that reboots would 'clear'. S/W upgrades are easy on those and I think you can download them for free if your troubleshooting takes you there. Check the MCK logs first. That may reveal a lot! If I remember, 9600-8-1-N

vwbsttek: Way back to basics: have you verified the ground at the remote location where the battery backup plugs in?

Your problem at the remote site has to be either the extender or the module, both are susceptible to locking up on a power hit. you can try isolating them from each other to see if you can verify what's giving you the problem. (Different backups/[power outlets)

can you replicate the problem with a momentary drop to the extender? (normally a bad practice but you are sounding like you are getting desparate here)

No drops will not replicate the trouble. only surges. UPS should not allow the surge, and this is the second ups that we have tried.
