ME Start button

I need some help, my father's computer is messed up. His start button is there but does not push, Interent keeps giving an Active Desktop error, Safe mode won't install CD support to reload OS or Interent. What do I need to try next, control panel is hosed as well, so I cannot create a boot disk and he does not have one. Please any help is appreciated. thanx.

Have you tried using Last Known Good Configuration? You should be able to obtain a boot disk image from

He could not get to the Internet, the problem also messed up his Interent. I finally changed his CMOS setting to boot from CD and reinstalled the OS, it took three times to finally work, but the computer now works. thanks
