Every time i try to install maya2008 unlimited msinstaller gets interrupted with 11708, 1008, and 1015 codes. I have managed to get all of the other installer packages to work (documentation, directX, directconnect, and isscript).
I have changed the following values in the registry in attempt to resolve:
HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Safer\\CodeIdentifiers
PolicyScope d1
HKLM\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Installer
MaxPatchCacheSize d0

I have also disabled DEP for windows istaller, setup.exe, and maya2008.exe. Still no success and I'm running out of ideas.
The error information is as follows:

1170
Product: Maya 2008 -- Installation operation failed.

Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x8007043C

I am running SP2 and suspect it may be relevant. If so, is there a workaround? An update file for windows installer was also included on the disk in the same folder as the .msi file in question. However, when I attempt to install it, it says that it is an older version and need not be installed. Is there any way to make it install anyways?
If any more information is needed, just let me know.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Found relevant codes, information, and fixes. Unfortunately, most of them I have tried, and the ones I hadn't, didn't work. I attempted to use the msiexec tool to extract the msi file and it never would extract. I then found a tool called LessMSIerables, it recieves an error when attempting to open the installer package. It seems like corrupt data, but my friend installed off of the disk before and after I had my problems without trouble. He also installed XP X64 and installed the X64 maya package without trouble. Makes no sense. It is a rather large package and I have heard reports of Windows installer acting funny over large packages giving 1008 errors. I have found multiple reports of this and tried all reported fixes without success. I seem to be boned here and I REALLY need to learn this software.

Have you tried the simple basics like disabling Antivirus software and other security type programs?

Are there any clues in your Event Viewer?

For troubleshooting, enable the MsiInstaller verbose log file using the instructions from KB article Q223300.

Do you think it may be a faulty permissions type of problem?

Have a look at the SubInAcl example in this thread.

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

I am not familiar with "Maya", does it have any Help and Support personnel that you can contact?

I managed to get a newer version of LesMSIerables to extract the package. While extracting it attempted to create an invalid character in a directory name. The same thing most likely happens during the extraction process before the install causing windows installer to be interrupted and the installation to fail. Anybody second that?

Concerning the invalid character, why on your machine, and not your friend's?

Are you using a CD or similar media, have you tried copying the MSI or Setup files to the hard drive and running it from there?

I have no idea. We have different versions of XP, and we both do a lot of tweaking. So I was wondering if there was a way to change the parameters of what characters are considered valid or invalid. As for your other question, I have tried from CD, mounted ISO and HDD.

What I am thinking is that if the original media is CD then perhaps there is a problem with your CD Drive, or if it (the original media) is a non-commercial CD that you burned yourself, a bad burn from day one?

Any ISO that was downloaded from the manufacturer and burned to CD may benefit from checking with something like this.

CRC Checking Utility From Microsoft unfortunately I cannot supply any link but you may pickup something similar via Google.

All I can suggest is that you obtain another copy, or download, and try again.

Tried that as well. Completely different version. Same story.
Im running chkdsk on the drive right now. I'll update with the outcome of this. It is possible that the same file keeps getting written to a bad sector, although, unlikely considering how many times it has been re-written.

I have to ask whether this a "legit" version of the program or some dubious, and not so legal version, sorry about asking that, but it is all that I can think of at the moment as being the cause of your problems?

Actually, your suspicions were somewhat correct. However, the free personal learning edition available at Autodesk's website gives the exact same error when trying to install. Too weird. I think that I am looking at a re-format here.

What about a Parallel install of XP and then trying to get the free evaluation version to load on that? This might save you reformatting for no gain?

266465 - HOW TO: Perform a Parallel Installation of Windows 2000

You can do the same with XP. Don't install any unnecessary programs just some virus scanners, keep the parallel installation as simple as possible.

Or the paragraph in this article.

How to install or upgrade to Windows XP

I've been thinking about installing Linux anyways. So I may just do that. Also, I was planning on a new 750 Gig drive anyways. Hopefully it's not a processor issue.

How many times have you tried to install this software? If more than once, I would try the following (Have seen this work many times).

1) Open regedit.
2) Do a search for maya2008.
3) For every entry in the registry that is found DELETE it!

There may have been registry entries added by a failed install and everytime you attempt to re-install, the program sees the entries and ignores re-adding new ones. Have seen this with a couple of different pieces of software and can be very frustrating.

Try running CC cleaner as often an install wil leave keys all over the shop). I've had it before and the only way to clear the carp out was to clean the reg. Unless of course you know what {4463-Af58-etc-etc-ect} actually references....

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.
