When i boot up my xp pc it take about 1min 2 be ready to use which i think is quite good. I am on a home network using an Origo 8400 (4-port lan and ADSL Modem) I share my printer over the network. I also run Norton Antivirus and Zone alarm pro and use IIS to test my webpages. However im concerned about how many programs run at startup here is a list of them below.

spoolsv.exe
savscan.exe
ziptoa.exe
MsPMSPSv.exe
pctspk.exe
nvsvc32.ese
NPROTECT.EXE
NAVAPSVC.EXE
inetinfo.exe
vsmon.exe
client32.exe
symlcsvc.exe
CCEVTMGR.exe
CCSETMGR.exe
svchost.exe
SMAgent.exe
svchost.exe
tcpvcs.exe
svchost.exe
cftmon.exe
svchost.exe
rundll32.exe
evntsvc.exe
zlclient.exe
snmp.exe
iTouch.exe
CCAP.exe
svchost.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
msmsgs.exe
smss.exe
explorer.exe
system
system idle process

Now there seems to be lots of SVCHOSTS but if i close some of them the pc says NT/AUTHORITY and i need to shutdown. I recently deactivated lots of things through services.msc following one of the sites i found onhere. I just wondered which of these processes could be stopped escpecially the svchosts.
I have scanned my pc and have no viruss, spyware, or adware.

An excellent source I use is

Click on the "Task List" button, then look up the process.

It is normal to have multiple SVCHOST processes.
Note: there are viruses that insert an SCVHOST (2nd & 3rd letters transposed) process into the system.

To check another example, "zlclient" is part of Zone Alarm.

Terry.
