Hi Guys, hope you can help me with a baffling problem...

I have a customer with an IP500 v1 Control Unit. The customers IP Phones are on their own network connected to LAN 1. The customers data network, including voicemail PC, is connected to LAN2.

Recently the WAN Port stopped working. The LED's show no activity to suggest anything is connected to the port. We have tried different patch cables, switch port, switch on the data network. No effect.

So I have a replacement unit on my desk, which is exhibiting the exact same problem. I'm unable to connect to the unit via the WAN port, even when it is in it's default state. My Windows LAN connection is set to DHCP, and I'm able to connect when patching into the LAN Port. I've confirmed DHCP is enabled on LAN2, however when I patch into the WAN Port, Windows is telling me no cable is connected. The only difference here, is both the green and amber LED's flash on and off slowly, at the same time.

I've tried upgrading the unit from 4.2 to 5.0. No effect.

Have I really been unlucky and got the same fault with a different unit, or have I missed something?

Thanks in advance

It could be a faulty VCM card.....

Thanks for the suggestion hairlesssupportmonkey, however I am struggling to see how this will be a VCM Card Issue. Would you mind expanding for me?

Because of experience.

take the VCM card out and see what happens - does it fix it? of not, then the LAN / WAN port is faulty. Just swap the unit out.

Thanks hairlesssupportmonkey appreciate the suggestion. Will try this and see where we are at.

Always put Voice on LAN2 and data on LAN1.
Avaya even documented it! Not all application features are supported on LAN2 so don't be cocky and follow Avaya's advise.

If you disconnect LAN1 & LAN2 and you connect only your PC to either one, does it work? Test both.
If yes then you have a LAN problem if No then try the same with a factory default config.
If it still does not work then replace the hardware.

Hello intrigant,

If you disconnect LAN1 & LAN2 and you connect only your PC to either one, does it work? Test both.
This is how I am testing on my test rig, with the configuration defaulted. I can connect to the unit on LAN 1, but not via LAN 2.

If yes then you have a LAN problem if No then try the same with a factory default config.
As above

If it still does not work then replace the hardware.
Thanks for the suggestion, we are currently exploring this route

I assume you have also changed the patch lead and/or switchport you are using for testing :)
