It's to do with Strine and the way some aussies sometimes stress their pronounciations.

And our tendency to avoid pausing between words. In a similar vein, the National Party here in Australia (rural conservatives) used to be known as the Country Party. Announcing "I'm a Country member" would be met by those of differing political affiliations with "Yeah, I remember".

Sounds like Aussie politics truly make strange bedfellows.

There's a car company, KIA Motors. I always pronounce the letters individually, K.I.A. (Killed In Action for those not familiar with the acronym).

How about SAP? The company makes it clear that it is S A P, and not sap, which, of course, is a viscous plant fluid, OR a pitiful looser.

Department of Aviation here is usually referred to as D.O.A. which I tend to associate more with "dead on arrival".

...how come Volvo has been able to "get away with it" for all these years?

They have a legitimate explanation: Volvo is Latin for "I roll".
Similary, radio means "I radiate", video means "I see", and audio means "I hear".

Da mihi sis crustum Etruscum cum omnibus in eo.

There was an pre-Pearl Harbor acronymn used by the US Navy:

CINCUS

for Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet.

(pronounced sink us).

Da mihi sis crustum Etruscum cum omnibus in eo.

Another funny acronym used by the US Military:

AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service)

Hey, Skip, try Viagra for the pitiful looserness.

When I was on a deployment to egypt we had to cover the name "Nike" on our shoes, jackets etc. before we could go into Cairo. we were told it was a "vulgarity" with no further explination, I did a quick search today and couldn't find a reference other than to note that there were no nike products available in the egypt marketplaces.

Does anyone else chuckle when they see that Oprah Winfrey's production company is called "Harpo"? I realize that it's Oprah spelled backwards, but wasn't that also the name of a whale?

Harpo was one of the Marx brothers, wasn't he?

Are you thinking of harpoon (the lance-ended javelin that whalers use to kill whales)?

Yes, he was.

You know, I don't know what I was thinking. For some reason, when I hear or see the word "Harpo" I think of a whale. I can't seem to find a valid reference to Harpo the Whale though. Maybe she's just one of my imaginary friends. [bugeyed]

That just makes me think of harpies. Draw your own conclusions.

Many moons ago we used to refer to the "Commander-In-Chief, Pacific Fleet" as CINC PAC FLEET NIN COM POOP.

It has a certain rhythm to it.

This isn't exactly a product name, but...a few years ago, in the world of "professional" wrestling there was a character named Rosey who started training to become a superhero like another wrestler named, The Hurricane. Rosey kept his name, but he was given a title of SuperHero In Training.

I just found this one on a blog site about Finland (written by an American who has lived in Finland for the last 4 years)...

Super Piss: a windshield wiper fluid. The jets where the water comes out are called "pissapoika" in Finnish (pee-boy). "Pissa" is a very mild word in Finnish. However, it is not so mild in English.

My favorite is a drive-through liquor store I saw in Covington, Kentucky: Liquor Quik.
