Hi,

I have just launched a new site and would like as many people as possible to review it for me.

I asked for a review before and got some negative feedback so I have changed the whole layout. You wouldn`t beleive it was the same site!!

Please could you tell me:-

Browser used.
Connection.
Approximate page loading speed.
Any problems encountered.(Display or otherwise)
Any other comments you may have(Good or bad).

Thanks in advance

Wullie

Hi mate,

This isn`t relating to your post but I have a few questions.

Did you connect to the site?
If so, did you have any problems?

The reason I ask is that the site is down here but I think it was you?? mabye not but someone clicked on the chat button on the site so it must be up somewhere..

Also if anyone else reads this, please let me know if you can connect..

Any help appreciated

Wullie

nope i cant connect now either..i think you need to have a few words with your host...;-)..or maybe its just one of uncle bill's (our best friend) programs actin up(what else is new) -Greg :-Q

I'm in San Diego, CA, USA, and it's down now. Says theres no DNS entry.

Thanks,

I can`t contact my host until tommorow, have to phone as e-mail support is terrible, can`t really complain too much, the site is hosted free.

Considering paying for a host soon so if anyone has any suggestions of any that are cheap and reliable with good programs give me a shout please...

Thanks again Wullie

Use HostRocket! I use them for my site, and it's great. You get everything for $10/month!

goto

or more specifically,
I wont lie, I am an affiliate, and I do get paid $20 for every person I sign up (if you go through me). But you can go to their site for yourself and see all the great features. Unlimited POP3/webmail emails, full cgi, PHP, mysql, .htaccess, 300 mb storage, 10 subdomains, much much more! You control EVERYTHING from your browser!

My site is hosted by them and it hasn't been down yet (7 months ad counting!).

Hi,

Sorry about this but could someone please check the site for me as I am getting a lot of comments that the site is not accessable..

I have contacted my host and they assure me the problem with their servers has been fixed, so they say it is out of their hands.

If you cannot connect please try
Otherwise, I have no idea...

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Thanks
Wullie

I still get an unknown host error.

Your host is terrible. Who is it?

I can set you up with HostRocket! They are a great hosting service. Go to and click the ad on the left. They are the best server available, I've tried a lot and have never been more satisfied. They have a great plan with all the features for $10/month

I'm in the Netherlands and tried loading your pages but nope..
This is what I get almost immediately:

************************************
While trying to retrieve the URL:
The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for The dnsserver returned:

DNS Domain ' is invalid: Host not found (authoritative).
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
**************************************

...No wonder they're hosting it for free...

I get (as of 10 am pacific standard time, 6 Aug) unable to find host (error 11001 on Microsoft proxy user)...

sorry.:-(

could it be a filtering problem?

-Mi

Thanks everyone,

I am going to move to a paid hosting service soon but as money for the site is tight at present, I will have to stick it out for the time being.

I am not going to name and shame the host as they are providing the service free, but a little tip if you want to find out is to search for the site at
What?? I never said a word.. LOL That will teach them!!

Anyway, the site seems to be up for most people as we have had over a thousand hits so far.

Well, thanks again everyone.

Wullie

I can't get it from the usa (pennsylvania) and my brother in oregon (who was online when i was reading this) can't get it either...so maybe it can only be reached from the uk? -Greg :-Q

Thanks everyone

I have had a few choice words with my host and they are going to look into it.

Probably won`t make a difference but I`ll just have to wait and see.

Failing that, I am going to a paid hosting service in the next couple of months.

Thanks again everyone. Wullie

You should try saving your graphics as .GIF files rather than .JPGs. They are coming through a little blurry. GIFs will probably optimize at a smaller size too with such solid colors.

1 question...

What's the difference in compression of jpgs and gifs?...

I've noticed in some pics, jpgs are smaller, others, gifs are smaller...and same image width and height, but just different pictures... Regards,

The mathematical formulas for optimizing GIFs and JPGs work a little differently. If You have a lot of solid colors with no gradients or fading between colors, optimizing an image as a GIF will come out smaller that optimizing it as a gif and will look better. If you took that image and optimized it as a JPG, you will often get blurring between colors where you would rather have a sharp edge.

On the opposite side though, if you have an image with a lot of blending and gradiends and you optimize it as a GIF, it will not appear blended as much. You will see more distinct separation between colors that you probably don't want. If you optimize a highly blended image as a JPG it will likely come out smaller in filesize than as a GIF. This is assuming you're looking for the best quality. You could optimize a blended image as a GIf and get a smaller image size, but it would look much worse than an optimized JPG at the same file size.

It all depends on what your image is like though. As sort of a rule of thumb photo-type images will work better as JPGs, and blocky solid-type images (like logos, buttons) work better as GIFS. The buttons on the left side of the site linked above, would look much better if they were GIF files. Guaranteed.

Thanks for the comments.

I had started to make the gif`s a while back but it was taking up too much time, there were a lot of other items on the site more urgent than them.

I will eventually get round to it but at present they don`t look too bad so I am going to keep them the way the are for now.

Thanks again Wullie

Hello wullie!

I've just briefly looked on your pages and I would recomend to save images as GIFs on the top and left menu (they would look much better if they were GIFs).

Godd Luck!

Hi, Thanks for your comments

EugenePaliev

If you read the post before yours you will notice that this has already been discussed.

I have tried to save the files as gifs but the quality is actually a lot worse than it is now.

Every image looks fine apart from one.(A little darker but I can handle that)

The image that I cannot convert is the top banner as the colour is blended throughout and this looks terrible when made as a gif.

The reason the images are a little blurry is that I optimised them due to high page loading times.

I am at present trying to come to a comprimise between quality and file size but the best looking images I have tried have been jpgs.

Thanks again for your comments
Wullie

I dont know how you all are seeing the site! I'm in Silicon Valley, California, USA and every time I've tried to go to your site I get a no DNS entry error message. This isn't a problem with my ISP so I assume it's with your host Wullie.

I know your host is bad and you've been having problems with it, but I saw other people commenting on the graphics so I assume someone can see it! Why can't I? -gerrygerry
