Hi,
we have IP Office 500 with 6 free ports for new extensions. We have 6 new handsets (5410) and these all work fine when I connect to IP Office directly.

Problem is we want to use these in a different office and only have 2 cat5 cable through to that office.

Can I purchase a normal POE network switch and uplink that to the Avaya? Then just connect my new handsets to that POE switch?

Pointers would be much appreciated.

thanks.

Wellllllllll.... You're not going to be able to do so with 5410's.. They are a digital phone. If you have network connectivity at the other office, you can try using a 5610 phone.

Should have mentioned that a 5610 is an IP Phone.

aha (sorry I'm used to working with Snom/Astra IP phones). Can I use a digital extension module? Can these be connected by network (IP)?

I've never tried connecting a digital expansion module with anything longer than the supplied blue cables, but I know others have tried it without much success. You're better off using IP Phones.. If you have old Astra phones laying around, you could buy a SIP endpoint license and use those phones.

great, that makes sense. I can swap for 6 x 5610s no problem. Will I need another license to use those if my 5410s were working?

thanks for your help, really appreciated.

Before yo try to use 56XX handsets remember you will need a VCM for your system

Considering the number of handsets you need you could try combining multiple handsets onto 1 cat 5 skt
the 54XX series phones only use a single pair so in theory you could run 4 down 1 cat 5 & re-split at the remote end.

How well this works would depend on how long the final cable run is & should only bee seen as a stop-gap measure.

IPGuru - think that will work. Does the single pair also provide power to the handset?
If not can look at power injector or something.

yes power is supplied in line

fyi it is the center pair on the standard cable that is used.

With 2 cat 5 cables, you can run up to eight 5410 phones. The issue will be getting the individual pairs to the right location. Probably easier than converting to ip phones.

Cheaper too!!!

You could look into coolports, or do as one of my customers did and connect a Digital expansion module to the extended cat 5 cable (theirs was about 50m).

Although not supported it does seem to work.

Pepp77, 50 meters will not work at all!!!
If cable's longer then 1 meter do not work then 50 definitly will not work.

I can only believe this when i see it, sorry

TLPeter - I can guarantee it does work as I had a customer using an IPoffice 500 on the ground floor at the front of the building connected to an expansion module at the back of the second floor using a single cat5 cable.

All of the phones on the expansion module worked with no problems.

Then it cannot be a cat5 cable.
It must at least be a shielded cable and i still would see it with my own eyes :)

I would definitly put this in the support contract as "Do not call for problems with extension XXX till XXX" :)

We were very surprised as well especially after telling them they cannot do it, only for them to advise that they already have and it was working.

We did then tell them that any faults with that module or the phones connected to it were not covered and they just said "ok, but this is how we need to do it".

Basically they couldnt afford to pay for cabling to take the 30 phones from the ground to the second floor, so just ran one cable up there through the floor themselves.

We still do not recommend it is done, but it can work in an emergency it seems.

are the phones 2 wire or 4 wire phones? you could just strip back the cat5 cables giving you 8 pairs and patch them at each site?

You may have got lucky with your site, possibly helped by v good cable quality.

I am glad you gave the customer a caveat because I have systems misbehave with in the same rack with a 3M cable used in error. they do not just stop working but give very erratic & operation when under load
