Extend existing Avaya IP Office 406 v2 system with IP500 v2

My company currently has Avaya IP406 v2 system and we are planning to add several new extension in the system.

Instead of going with IP400 extension module which has already reach EOS, we would rather go with IP500 v2 (and newer model of deskphone which IP406 v2 does not support), incrementally. That say we don't anticipate anymore extension in the next couple of years. One IP500 control unit with 8 DS port will suffice.

My question is whether it is possible to connect the two systems together, will users of the older system call users of the newer system internally etc? Can IP500 control unit be treated as an extension for IP406 (with enhanced compatibility of course)

Is there any reading or installation instruction that I can use as a reference?

At this point it's a cost issue. Management doesn't feel the need to upgrade the whole system apart from adding just a few extensions.

One IP500 with only one DS8 is not a really big invest. If you replace the whole system in one step you will need much less time for the whole 'project' and you can swap your existing licenses to a new dongle and don't have to pay them twice. Just watch out for necessary additional licenses like essential edition.

We currently at max capacity of IP406 with IP400 30-ports extension module. If we replace the whole things we will probably need a IP500, 2-3 DS8 and a DS30.

The IP500 can handle 8 modules by default and 12 with the EXP card.
So i would go for an IP500v2 and the extra module.
It is a little investment.
The 406 is old and outdated.

I thought that IPO500 DS8 module has only 8 ports (port 1-8) for phones and port 9-12 for something else.

Correct. But you can have up to 12 x expansion modules... i.e DS30 (but only 8 out of the box)

Your life will be much simpler if you install IP500V2 at R9.0, move the current DS30 (you're keeping it anyway, so put it on the IP500), and add two DS8 modules. If you were to make the two systems networked in a SCN, you'll need networking licenses.

If you want to swap out your 406v2 exactly you'll need:
-an IP500V2,
-a DS8 card,
-a Phone2 card,
-a legacy card carrier to fit your trunk card to
-and possibly a VCM card if your 406v2 has VOIP.

On top of that (to get it to work to begin with) you'll need a Essential Edition license.

Your DS30 expansion modules can be reused and attached to the IP500v2. Just stick to R9.0, the legacy card carrier is not supported in R9.1 (as well as v1 expansion modules btw).

Expanding, as you say it, your 406 with a 500 would essentially mean building a Small Community Netwerk (SCN) which is not recommend if your software releases are more than 1 major release apart. That will definitely be your case as the 406 will not go beyond R5. Apart from that, you will need all of the above, plus SCN licenses and a VCM card in your 406 to even make that work. Those are also EOL so that is not a viable option

Long story short: replace the 406 with the 500 as stated above. But before you do, contact your BP

(Ofcourse there are several more configuration varieties, VOIP or no VOIP, if VOIP,expand with IP Phones instead of DS Phones, ditch the Phone2; but you get the grand picture right? )
