Hi all,

I am a German, speaking and writing english quite good, but not perfect.

As the football championships is in germany this year, I want to design some welcome t-shirts with old german football sayings (pointingnesses?).

First of all I know in british english the game is called "football", in american english it's "soccer", right?

And "game" is the game itself, if I want to talk about England vs. Germany playing 90 minutes that is called a "match", right? In germany these two are called the same: "Spiel".

And each match is played on the "field", not on the "place", right?

All in all I don't want to make a mistake, so I thought the best thing would be to ask some English / Scottish/ Americans and other people talking english here.

The main theme on each t-shirt will be "football rules", as in "football regulations" or "football rules the world".

And I collected several hundred sayings from which I picked eleven, mostly from Sepp Herberger and translated them to english. Here they are, are these okay?

1. Balls, we need balls!

2. Offside is, when the referee whistles.

3. The ball is round and a match lasts 90 minutes.

4. The round is bound for the rectangular.
(remark: the round = the ball, the rectangular = the goal)

5. The fastest player is the ball.

6. After the match is before the match.

7. Decisive is on the field.

8. The next match is always the hardest match.

9. You got to be eleven friends!

10. Modern plays, who wins.

11. If the ball passes the goalkeeper, most of all that is a goal.

Number 7 is not a whole sentence, but it's also no real sentence in the german original citing, as it was said by a foreign player in broken german. So that is okay as it is. All in all it's not that serious. Nevertheless I'm interested in any feedback on this, even if you are not into football or sport in all.

Bye, Olaf.

If you hadn't said that I would have felt worse about correcting you. But since you admitted to a lack of perfection, I thought you might appreciate it. I'm surprised noone else beat me to it.

Actually, Tracy, we all just took Olaf's self-assessment at face value.<grin> (...and I knew that Olaf is so much better at English than I'll ever dream of being in German.[2thumbsup])

I could honestly, and willingly, say the same thing. I took three years of German in high school and three semesters in college, and got straight A's all the time. Yet I doubt I could hold a conversation in anything better than pidgin German.

Just kidding, Tracy. At the next GeekFest I'll tell you about the three years it took me to get one year of French lessons.

A Kiss and Tell? Might be worth attending the next meet.

Kiss entrail? I haven't the guts for that! Ewww!

You're welcome to attend the next GeekFest, but you'll first have to buy two rounds (one for me, one for Higgins!)

Seriously, what guy wouldn't tell Miss FrenchTeacher that he didn't get it and that they should try again?!!

Even the sophomores called us "Norm and Dee."

Sorry, I'm a son of a beach.

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to thank you once again for your help on this topic. Since several days my T-Shirt shop is available online via
That's not meant to promote this, but if anyone is interested in the final result, feel free to take a look.
Special thanks to ChipperMDW, although my shop isn't embedded into it's own URL and isn't listed in the spreadshirts shop listing, I already got 1 order on the "put the round thingy into the square thingy" shirt.

I take part in the shop championship spreadshirt organizes at As one of the last entries I'm listed in the first page of that shop gallery. I think the one order I got so far comes from someone, who found my shop via this listing.

End of the month I'll know, if I won a prize there. I'd not be disappointed if not, but who knows. Not many shops competing with mine show more than texts on their shirts, so perhaps I'll win one of the runnerup prizes. Let's see how it develops.

Bye, Olaf.

You know folks, in Italy we are experiencing a big trouble with soccer, referees not too honest and more...
'Cause to the typical ability of italian players to fall down like hitten by a bullet and whining for a penalty, a serbian trainer once said "*PENALTY* is when referee whistles

Very best of luck with your enterprise, Olaf.

Sbix - yes, there does seem to be a tendancy for this sort of behaviour even in the English Premier League too, except the officials are (I hope) becoming more aware of it.

Hi Olaf,

It looks like you made a good impression after all... good luck!

Olaf,

Please know that I wish your venture every possible success. I earned a Business degree from Wake Forest University, and entrepreneurs have always been my heroes.

Hmm, "T" Shirts... there's a [red]t[/red]hought there, an [red]i[/red]dea, [red]m[/red]erchandising.. yes, that's it!

Question, are there any Europeans who AREN'T crazy about "football"? Or are they killed immediately when this is found out?

Question - Why isn't football/soccer that popular here in the states? I love soccer(football) and still don't understand why it hasn't caught on.

"So, pass another round around for the kids. Who have nothing left to lose and for those souls old and sold out by the soles of my shoes"

actually it is catching on, esp. due to usa high ranking in world terms.

several factors to consider:
1. for the kids in many poorer countries in the top in football have no other sport to play. a ball can be as simple as a plastic bags tied together and a goal 2 stones on the pavement. they have been playing it since they were old enough to walk.
2. cost of many sport played in usa is high, but people have the money to spend.
3. major reason for american football popularity is gambling. period.
4. basketball has similar situation (gambling), but is much simpler to play and learn. bball can be played by poor kids similar to football in poorer countries. also explains why bball is popular world wide EXCEPT to complete world wide need tall players. obviously not so with football.
5. baseball simple and cheap to play for kids so also popular in poor countries. not sure why it hasn't caught on in europe.

this obviously isn't the whole story, and i apologise if some of my 'facts' are wrong, but this should give some ideas.

per ardua ad astra

Sbudznski - IMHO, while soccer(football) is extreamly fun to play, it isn't that exciting to watch as american football.
But that's just my 2 cents

Stubnski

american football (where you can throw the ball forward) is fun to watch, but more fun to play

canadian football, which is similar but slightly different, even more than that
