I have XP Pro. I use an Epson Perfection 1250 scanner, witht the latest drivers installed. I have a DSL internet connection with Earthlink. The problem occurs after a reboot - when I get to the desktop, usually the first thing I want to do is connect to the Internet. I click on the connection shortcut, and nothing happens for around 30 seconds. After that time, the connection dialog box will open, and everything works fine. I mentioned the scanner because on a reboot, it takes a while for the scanner to be recognized, and the connection would only work after the scanner had made it 2 little "whurr.. whurr." sounds. Well I unplugged the scanner, and the delay does not go away.

oh, one more thing - I tried going to Start/Programs/ Connect to.. instead of the shortcut, and the funny thing - no connections appear. They come back eventually...

Anyone else experience this?

thanks
James

By any chance is your DSL attached via USB? If so I would suggest the following:

0) Completly remove the scanner. The driver, the software, everything!!!!

If the problem still occurs then...

1) Have Earthlink install your DSL with an "Ethernet Card" (NIC) instead of a USB device.

No, the DSL modem is already connected to a NIC card. The scanner is USB. I will completely remove it, and see it that helps, then at least I will know it's the scanner.
