Our main database product is called OneKey.

Now to the parent company who are not English - I'm sure that made perfect sense. We know it colloquailly [sp?] as Wonkey Donkey...

Yes, and we've seen other threads that expose the perils of Americans speaking in the UK and Brits speaking in the U.S. without an appropriate understanding of the others' "language".

Brits in America, beware differences in meanings of: rubber, knock me up, squash, biscuits, bonnet, boot, chips, plaster, valve, jelly, smoke a fag (might get you arrested for a hate crime), mate, duck, cock, braces, et. al.

Americans in the UK, beware of differences in meanings of: Randy (if your given name is Randall), fanny, pants, knickers, suspenders, et. al.

Can you answer me a question then please?

What is a biscuit in the US?

It's a dumpling.

Probably the most famous example of this is General Motors' unfortunate choice to name one of its models the Chevy Nova. No doubt whoever came up with the name figured everyone would think "bright star", forgetting that in Spanish speaking countries "no va" means "it doesn't go" - a rather poor name for a car.

*sigh*

Will this urban legend never die?

I refer you to

Among the explanations cited there is this:

Assuming that Spanish speakers would naturally see the word "nova" as equivalent to the phrase "no va" and think "Hey, this car doesn't go!" is akin to assuming that English speakers woud[sic] spurn a dinette set sold under the name Notable because nobody wants a dinette set that doesn't include a table.

I believe that an American biscuit is the same as a British scone, and that a British biscuit is an American cookie.

When prepared properly, it is a light, flakey bread.

Here is a sausage biscuit:

Huh? The UK biscuit is different from the USA biscuit?

In the UK a biscuit is what we Americans call a cookie.

We only use the term "cookie" over here for things that are considered to be American biscuits. The are round, flat things and usually have bits of chocolate chip in them.

To elaborate, we have all sorts of other biscuits which are not called cookies e.g. bourbon biscuits.

I've never heard of the word "snigger" because I thought the word was "snicker".

The words are synonymous but it's still a new one on me.

MJLDBA,

In the U.S., the term is "snicker"; in the U.K., the term is "snigger".[smile]

Underneath the posting box is a link to "Process TGML". In that popup window, you'll see all the available TGML options and for images, it is the [ignore]

Dagon,

Like this:[tab]

That looks like something we would call a cookie.

Thanks John and CC [bigsmile] just a couple of CQ's:

What if the picture's on my hard disk, not a web server?

Shouldn't the name of those cookies be obscured with a black marker?? [wink]

You need to get it onto a website before you can post it. There are several free services that host images for you (like imageshack.us).
